Volleyball Quickly Springs Back After Recent Conference Loss

The women's volleyball team were unable to continue their win streak when they took on the L.A. Pierce College Brahmas last Wednesday, but they quickly bounced back by defeated the Glendale College Vaqueros 3-0.

The fifth ranked Corsairs suffered a devastating loss against the Brahmas, 2-3, after riding a 12 game win streak.

"It was probably one of the toughest losses in my coaching career thus far. Because we were up 2-0 and we lost in five," said Wendy Dreher, head coach.

The Corsairs were unable to pull ahead of the Brahmas in the first two matches but afterwards the Corsairs focus and competitiveness slowly began to decline as the Brahmas prepared to retaliate.

"In the first two games we were solid but we weren't playing overly aggressive we just did what we need to do, to win."

By the third game the Brahmas defense began to stop the Corsairs at every turn. Tough blocking coupled with the Corsairs struggling offensive proved to be a lethal combination.

"They were just stuffing balls and we weren't able to run our offense," said Dreher.

During the fourth game the Corsairs made a five point run bringing the score 29-21 and forcing the Brahmas to call two timeouts.

" I would say that was the only time that we truly competed, at that point you have to play perfect volleyball to win, you aren't able to make a mistake otherwise its over," said Dreher.

At the game's conclusion Emi Heaton took 15 kills, Katherine Shorey took 14 kills, Lindsey Sommer chalked up 5 aces, Ashley Brown racked up 24 digs, Chelsea Baiz generated 48 assists, and Cynthia Rachel defended with 7 blocks.

Despite such a loss the team stayed composed and continued the season with more determination.

"They've come back in really good spirits and I have really been impressed with their practices this week. I think they are focused and determined on what they want to do," said Dreher.

On Friday the Corsairs quickly stopped the Vaqueros in their tracks as soon as the first ball was served. The Corsairs clearly turned on their "A" game as they swiftly swept the Vaqueros 3-0 in little over an hour.

Throughout all the games the Corsairs showed off their good ball movement and communication, allowing them to surgically dismantle the Vaqueros defensive strategies. Each spike was executed with pinpoint accuracy, with very little overshot.

As each second passed, the Vaqueros offensive and defensive strategies disintegrate as Glendale 's lack of communication and defensive hesitations continued to take its toll.

The Corsairs quickly pulled away from the Vaqueros on the scoreboard to beat them by 23 points in the first match, 30-7.

The next game turned out to be a recurring nightmare for the Vaqueros as the Corsairs continued their assault to same conclusion as the first game, 30-7.

In the final game the Vaqueros woke up and began to pull their team together long enough to do some damage on the scoreboard. However, the result was still the same as the Corsairs buried the Vaqueros 30-12.

Shorey and Claudia Jacobs took 10 kills, Susan Young took 8 aces, Brown acquired 17 digs, Baiz gained 37 assists, and the team as a whole executed 26 aces.

The team will continue into their future matches with a 15-3 overall record and 7-1 conference record.

The Corsairs will once again face the Citrus College Owls tonight and Bakersfield College Renegades on Friday at the SMC Pavilion. The Corsairs easily conquered these two teams in previous matches 3-1 and 3-0, respectively.
