SMC's Volleyball Sack the Opposition

The Santa Monica College women’s volleyball team beat Mt.San Antonio College on Wednesday night giving the Corsairs a 2-1season record.

There were aound100 people in attendance cheering on the Corsairs as they were set out to dominate Mt. Sac.

Although Mt.Sac lost the first game by a narrow margin of 30-27, their competitive spirit buckled under the pressure of SMC’s offensive assault.

The Corsiars won the next two games 30-23 and 30-19 respectively.

Mt. Sac’s defense began to crumble soon after freshmanYessenia Gutierrez spiked the ball giving the Corsairs a 27-20 lead in the second ame. The game ended with a similar move by Gutierrez giving SMC the match.

The corsairs passed the ball well, with good rotation. After serving the ball with the score of 13-8 in the second set, defensive setter Morgan O’Neil gave a gutsy performance putting her body at the mercy of the floor to set up her players for quick easy spikes.

In a modest fashion, O’Neil said that her drive needed more improvement in the future. “We’re a young team and we’re still learning each other’s habits. So I would have to say it’s a progressive win,” said O’Neil.

O’Neal also said that the team needs some improvemrnts as well, “Our communication is

definitely lacking. If we make a bad play, then, you know, we really take it to heart. We don’t get over it,” said O’Neil.

With the score 20-15 SMC’s second game was just as good.

6’ 1” middle blocker Cynthia Rachel made good use of her height, giving Mt. Sac a strong swat of the ball to the hardwood.

Nevertheless, Rachel also mentioned her concern about court communication. “We were a little bit quiet today, not like last week against Long Beach when we were a bit more talkative,” said Rachel.

Rachel also expressed some contentment after the game. “I think we played very very well. We knew the team would do fairly well, but we hung in there and pulled it through,” said Rachel.

The highlight of the game came when freshman Josefa Laguna dove to the floor saving the point for Mt. Sac, while setting up her team mate, giving the Corsairs a 23-15 lead in the second game.

The crowd cheered, showing respect for Laguna’s athleticism.

Head Coach Wendy Dreher expressed her approval for her team’s performance. “I’m actually very happy. Everybody contributed in the match. We progress every day we step out on the court, whether it’s in practice, or in the match,” said Dreher after the game.

Dreher was particularly impressed with Freshman Lindsey Sommer’s performance. “Her hitting percentage was somewhere in the 800’s, and for someone that’s 5’5” on the right side, that’s pretty phenomenal,” said Dreher.

Although Dreher was pleased with her team after the game, she made it understood that there is still room for improvement. “Our serving and our passing is definitely something that we need to work on,” said Dreher.
