Dancin’ to the Sounds

The sounds of Francisco Aguabella and his Latin Jazz Ensemble quickly filled the Clock tower area last Thursday, and created a joyous crowd of both listeners and dancers.

Students and faculty assembled on the grass and on lawn chairs, where they quickly became enthusiastic when they heard the very first sounds of the jazz ensemble.

The ensemble, headed by Aguabella, includes Charlie Owens on tenor sax, Jorge Carbonell on drums, John Belzaguy on baby bass, and Donald Vega on the keyboard.

The ensemble played a seven-song set of which included the songs, “Conmigo,” and “Hicoteca,” with vocals by Aguabella and Belzaguy.

Aguabella’s ensemble also played at Santa Monica College last spring and enjoyed performing again.

“I like very much to play for the students,” said Aguabella.

Many students danced salsa in front of the performers during the show. Among those dancing were Jose Caceres and Ana Cabrera, both members of the International Dance Club. Caceres takes classes and has a full-time job.

“It is the best way to have fun, especially to relieve the stress,” said Caceres.

The International Dance Club sponsored the event. They hold free dance classes on Tuesday and Thursday during the activity hour at the Clock tower and in LS 106. The classes teach a variety of dance styles both modern and historical. Besides salsa they also teach swing, tango, Greek, African, Irish, Israeli and much more.

UCLA Ballroom Dance Club, Associated Students and the International Dance Club founder, James Zimmer, funded the program.

Francisco Aguabella Jazz Ensemble often plays at the Bellage Hotel in West Hollywood and sometimes at the Conga Room. In addition, they will be playing at festivals on Sept. 22 at the Palms Court and Sept. 28 at the Blue Café at 9:30 p.m.
