COMPUTER INFORMATOIN SYSTEMS Course Descriptions

 

NOTE FOR ALL ONLINE CLASSES:
Online students must have their own personal computer with the proper software to complete their lab assignments hours. Online students cannot use SMC lab facilities at any time..


CIS 1, INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS WITH APPLICATIONS ( 3 UNITS )

This beginning course covers the broad use of microcomputers. Topics include a description of the microcomputer and how it works, microprocessing concepts, and how to buy a computer. Beginning word processing, spreadsheet, database, and Windows concepts are introduced. Hands-on experience is provided in a microcomputer lab. Note: Business students should enroll in CIS 4, and programming, computer science, or engineering students should enroll in CS 3. 


CIS 4, INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS, BUSINESS APPLICATIONS ( 3 UNITS )

This introductory course intended for business majors covers the broad use of microcomputers in business. Designed to familiarize students with Microsoft Office, it includes the study of word processing using Word 2002, spreadsheet using Excel 2002, database using Access 2002, and presentation software using Power Point 2002 as well as Windows and integration concepts. Hands-on experience in a microcomputer lab is included.


CIS 31, ACCOUNTING SPREADSHEETS ( 3 UNITS )

This course includes a detailed study of accounting applications using Excel 2002 spreadsheet package. Topics include the commands, formats, and functions of Excel 2002 with emphasis on its use as a problem solving and financial analysis tool.


CIS 32, DATA BASE MANAGEMENT ( 3 UNITS )

. Prerequisite: CIS 4.

This course presents an introduction to relational database management systems using Microsoft Access 2002. Topics include: designing, maintaining and querying a database; creating forms, reports, macros, custom toolbars and menus; integrating Access with other applications and the World Wide Web; and an introduction to writing Visual Basic code.


CIS 33, ADVANCED DATABASE MANAGEMENT (ACCESS)    ( 3 UNITS )

. Prerequisite: CIS 32.

Students will learn some of the advanced topics of Access 2002, including reviewing database objects; designing and documenting a database; using import wizards, action queries and SQL; designing complex forms; creating complex reports and queries; customizing the user interface; using visual basic for applications, error handling, combo box programming and ActiveX Controls; introduction to object models; securing the database; and connecting to the Web.


CIS 34, ADVANCED EXCEL WITH VISUAL BASIC FOR APPLICATIONS    3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: CIS 31.

This course provides Excel users with the knowledge, skills and techniques needed to write macros using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) within the Excel environment. The course helps users to automate repetitive tasks, customize Excel menus, buttons and screens, and create user friendly interface for input and output. The course covers basic programming techniques used in Visual Basic and VBA.


CIS 35, COMPUTER ACCOUNTING 3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: Accounting 1.

This course provides the student with a realistic approach to computerized, integrated accounting principle using Quick Books software package. Students will work with the various components of an accounting system in an ongoing business, as well as set up an accounting system for a new company.


CIS 36B, INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING - WORDPERFECT 1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: None.
This short introductory course in word processing. WordPerfect 2002, acquaints the student with basic features of the software including creating, revising, storing, and printing documents. It is offered as a brief overview of the software.


CIS 36C, INTRODUCTION TO SPREADSHEET - EXCEL 1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: None.
This short introductory course in Excel 2002 spreadsheet software acquaints the student with basic features of the software including creating, editing, formatting, and printing of electronic worksheets. It is offered as a brief overview of the software.


CIS 36F, INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS 2000  1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: None
.
This beginning course covers Microsoft Windows 2000, a graphical user interface and operating environment for the IBM compatible PC. Topics include the basics of using a "mouse"; icons; opening, closing and manipulating "windows"; using Explorer; and working with multiple programs at once (multitasking). My Computer, Network, Neighborhood, Recycle Bin, Start button and the Task bar will also be explored. Hands-on experience is provided in a microcomputer lab.


CIS 36G, INTRO TO INTERNET  1 UNIT

. Advisory: A working knowledge of Windows 2000.
This hands-on short course provides an introduction to the Internet and experience navigating the World Wide Web. Using Netscape Communicator 4, you will learn to use E-mail, search for information, visit interesting web sites, create and save your own bookmark list, maintain an address book, download files, and create your own individual Web page. The history of the Internet, proper on-line etiquette, and relevant social and ethical issues will be discussed.


CIS 36H, INTRODUCTION TO WEB PAGE (HTML)  1 UNIT

. Advisory: Working knowledge of Windows and the Internet.
This course is a short introductory course providing instruction in the use of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) to create World Wide Web pages. It includes the principles of basic page design, the use of graphics and other media files, and the creation of linked documents.


CIS 36I, INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT ACCESS  1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: None.
. Advisory: A working knowledge of Windows 2000.

This short introductory course in Access 2002 software acquaints the student with basic features of the software, including creating, retrieving, and printing electronic databases. It is offered as a brief overview of the software.


CIS 36J, INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING - WORD 1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: None
. Skill Advisory: Working knowledge of Windows.

This short introductory course in word processing (Microsoft Word) acquaints the student with basic features of the software including creating, revising, storing, and printing documents. It is offered as a brief overview of the software.


CIS 36P INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT POWERPOINT 2002 1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: None. While there is no formal prerequisite for this course, the student is expected to have a working knowledge of Windows 2000.
This hands-on short course on presentation software teaches the use of Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 for business applications. Presentations, handouts, and speaker notes are designed, created, and formatted, using PowerPoint. Students will use graphics, templates, and objects to enhance presentations. Hands-on experience is provided in a microcomputer lab.


CIS 36Q, INTRODUCTION TO QUICKBOOKS 1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: Accounting 1 or 21.
This beginning course covers QuickBooks, an easy-to-use, complete accounting system for small businesses. Topics include a review of fundamental accounting concepts, the creation of a QuickBooks company, and the analysis of financial statements, reports and graphs. Students will gain experience in the creation and use of invoices, purchase orders, inventory, bank accounts and payroll. Hands-on experience is provided in a microcomputer lab.


CIS 36T, INTRODUCTION TO TURBO TAX 1 UNIT

. Prerequisite: Accounting 15 or prior tax preparation experience.
This course will teach students how to prepare Federal income tax returns and California individual income tax returns using Turbo Tax software.


CIS 37A, WORD PROCESSING - M.S. WORD 3 UNITS

. Advisory: Ability to type 30 wpm and eligibility for English 1, and a working knowledge of Windows 2000.
Through the use of Microsoft Word 2002 software, skills are developed in creating, revising, formatting, storing, and printing a variety of business documents. Skills are developed from basic functions through utilizing features such as AutoText, columns, custom tab settings, mail merge, envelopes, labels, templates, headers/footers, footnotes, and Find/Replace features. Emphasis is placed on office-quality production of documents.


CIS 37B, ADVANCED MICROSOFT WORD 3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: CIS 37A.
Using Microsoft Word 2002, with an emphasis on the mass production of professional quality business copy, students learn to increase productivity through the concentrated use of automated features and multiple windows. Students develop problem solving skills through the repetitive use of document revisions and trouble-shooting assignments involving the customization of the software. Additionally, students develop advanced skills in areas of interest ranging from legal applications to graphics and books or newsletters. Upon completion of this course, a student has the skills to provide primary computer support to other individuals using this software.


CIS39 A, WORD PROCESSING - WORDPERFECT 3 UNITS

. Advisory: Ability to type 30 wam and eligibility for English 1.
Through the use of WordPerfect 2002, skills are developed in creating, revising, formatting, storing and printing a variety of business documents. Skills are developed from basic functions through block procedures, columns, macros, and mail merge. Emphasis is placed on office quality production of document.


CIS39 B, ADVANCED WORD PROCESSING 3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: CIS 39A
Using WordPerfect, skills will be developed beyond the basic procedures acquired in the beginning WordPerfect course. New functions include: advanced macros and macro editor, advanced mail merge functions, graphics, printer codes, file management, styles functions, setup and forms definitions, sorting techniques, columnar and math function, fonts, desktop publishing, lengthy manuscript editing with table of contents, outlines, indexing, and legal applications.


CIS 40, DESKTOP PUBLISHING FOR BUSINESS 3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: CIS 37A or CIS 39A or CIS 4.
. Advisory: English 1 or Business 31.

This course requires students to use computer and printing hardware and software to integrate text and graphics for designing, editing, and producing high-quality business publications. The honing of writing skills is emphasized as are the aesthetic and psychological components of layout and design.


CIS 50, INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET 3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: None.

This hands-on course on the Internet provides information and experience navigating and using the resources of the Internet. The course covers exchanging mail, searching for information, retrieving files and also using a Web browser to visit interesting World Wide Web sites. Also the development of the Internet, proper etiquette (Netiquette) and social and ethical issues will be discussed. Internet utilities such as Telnet, Usenet, Gopher and anonymous FTP will be explored and utilized. Each student will have the opportunity to create his or her own web page.


CIS 52, WEB PAGE DESIGN WITH FRONTPAGE 2000 3 UNITS

. Prerequisite: CIS 50 or ( CIS 36G and 36H ).

This hands-on course provides a complete coverage of FrontPage features-from the basic to the advanced-needed to tackle Web projects with confidence. Topics include web page creation, web site management, and HTML. Students will create and enhance Web pages with links, graphics, tables, frames, and form application using FrontPage 2002. They will learn how to create hotspots, incorporate JavaScript, use cascading style sheets, integrate office applications and use the WebBot to build search tools and a table of contents for a web site. Upon completing this course students will be ready to plan, build, promote, and maintain a professional Web site including selecting a web host, and uploading the site to a web server.


CIS 54, WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT AND SCRIPTING 3 UNITS

. Prerequisites: CIS 50 or ( CIS 36G and CIS 36H ) or ET 14.

This course is for Web site designers who need to extend their skills beyond HTML in the development of web sites through the use of scripting. The course covers both client and server side scripting. Topics include creating animated web pages, client-side forms validation, creating and using cookies to track users, processing forms data, and generating dynamically updated web pages.


CIS 56, INTRODUCTION TO MULTIMEDIA FOR THE WEB   3 UNITS

Transfer: CSU . Prerequisite: CIS 50 or ( CIS 36G and CIS 36H ).
. Corequisite: CIS 52.

Multimedia is woven combinations of text, graphic art, sound, animation, and video elements. This beginning level course is designed to provide students who are familiar with creating web pages with the ability to add dimensions of time, sound, motion, and interactivity to web pages via a variety of authoring tools. Through lectures and demonstrations, students learn the basics of how to create multimedia presentations on workstations and for the World Wide Web.


CIS 90, COMPUTER INTERNSHIPS 2 UNITS

. Prerequisite: None.
. Advisory: Keyboarding skills of 25 wpm or enrollment in OIS 1A or 9A.

The Internship Program is designed to provide the student with the opportunity of on-site experience in a computer lab. Students spend a minimum of six hours per week in a supervised computer facility.
