Folklorico de Santa Monica College
Dedicated to educating, preserving, and performing world dance

Folklorico de SMC was created in 1974 under the direction of faculty member Judith Douglas to showcase the array of world dance classes and to provide a performance experience in these diverse forms.  This performance practicum provides an opportunity to work with professional choreographers in a variety of world dance forms.

The company repertoire includes the following world dance forms:  Mexican Folklorico, West African, Indonesian, Japanese, Flamenco, Ballet, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, Step, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Tap, The company consists of 35-60 dancers from the diverse Santa Monica College community.  Folklorico de SMC provides a unique opportunity to train and to perform in a variety of world dance forms and to participate in an exceptional cultural dance exchange. Folklorico de Santa Monica College has toured extensively throughout Southern California and has performed throughout Mexico including performances in Tecate, Guadalajara, Aguas Calientes, and Vera Cruz, as well as performing in San Antonio, Texas and Washington DC. The company has performed at the Asociacion Nacional de Grupos Folkloricos, Community College 

Educators Association, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and the National Arch Diesis Convention.  The company has been winners at the National Ballet Folklorico de Mexico Dance Competition.

Acceptance into this exciting performance course is by audition.  Auditions are held each semester.  Audition dates and times are listed in the schedule of classes.
