ART GALLERY: "MY POLISH EXPERIENCE"

Building on a unique relationship forged between Santa Monica College art professor Don Emery and a group of Polish artists, the college will present an art exhibit of works titled "My Polish Experience: Don Emery and Friends."

The show will be at SMC's Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery Nov. 10 through

Dec. 8. An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at the gallery, located at SMC's Madison campus on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street.

The exhibit will feature works in all media, including sculpture, painting, assemblage, drawings, watercolors and prints. The show was developed from Emery's relationship with Polish artists that began in Los Angeles and grew during his Fall 2000 sabbatical in the Eastern European nation.

In 1999, Emery had been asked to do a review of a show of Polish artists at the Modern Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Later that year, he organized a show of printmakers and SMC artists at the same gallery that included his artist friend Jozef Palmer. That, in turn, led to three shows of Emery's work in the Polish cities of Kalisz, Lodz and Krakow in 2000 and 2001.

"This has been a wonderful experience being able to travel to Poland, being invited to exhibit, and being able to visit museums and galleries," Emery said. "Poland is a beautiful country with a rich history."

         The artists are:

         • Don Emery -- An SMC art professor for 32 years, Emery has had his work shown throughout the world, including the Glasgow Print Studio in Scotland, University of

Colorado, and the Brand Library in Glendale. His artwork is in many private and corporate collections. In the SMC exhibit will be a series of Emery's drawings of nudes and still life paintings that have been converted to computer piaso prints.

         • Jozef Palmer -- A Polish national who lives in Culver City, Palmer is the "artist in residence" at SMC. At 86, he is full of energy and is working on a number of new linocuts and woodcut prints.

         • Leonard Konopelski -- A graphic artist and teacher at the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, Konopelski has had his work exhibited throughout the world, including Kyoto, Copenhagen, Berlin, Budapest, New York, and Seoul.

         • Tomasz Misztal -- He is a multimedia artist, sculptor, painter and ceramist who has been a professor of fine arts in Poland and Portugal. His works are included in the collection of the Vatican in Rome.

         • Anna Siek -- The youngest of this group of artists, she graduated from the Art Institute in Kankaanpaa, Finland in 1999. She has been working at the Krakow Art Society Graphic Workshop for the past two years.

         • Teresa B. Frodyma -- Head of the Plastic Artists Society of Krakow, she runs the printmaking studio there and works primarily in etching and lithography. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout Poland and has received awards at the Biennale of Art in Poznan and the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.

         • Kasia Kupiec-Weglinski -- She has had her work exhibited at such places as the History Museum of Krakow in Poland and at the Soapbox Gallery in Venice, Calif. She has also taught at the Massachusetts College of Arts in Boston.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Call (310) 434-3434. The gallery will be closed Nov. 12 for Veterans Day and Nov. 22-24 for Thanksgiving.
