Welcome Sign-Language for Welcome
Santa Monica College has a growing population of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. We have many different types of students, and we are looking forward to providing services to them all. We encourage any Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing student who is interested in a college education to take part in this program.

Services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students
The Disabled Students Center has an Interpreter Coordinator, JoAn Joseph Peters, who assists Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students with any needs that might arise during each semester. There are also many hourly interpreters. Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students should introduce themselves to Denise to discuss services.

Services available for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students include:
Sign-Language Interpreters
Real-Time Captioners
FM systemsSign-Language for Introducing Oneself
Counseling
Registration Assistance
Computer Services
Tutoring
Preferential Seating


Interpreters, Captioners, and FM systems are available for any SMC educational activities, such as:
Interpreter and Huell Howser at Library Opening classes
meetings with instructors or tutors
appointments on campus
special events on campus
Any services must be requested in advance.

Quality of Service
It is our goal to make sure that your services are as effective as possible. All Interpreters and Real-Time Captioners at Santa Monica College have passed an evaluation. If you have a problem with your services, please contact the Interpreter Coordinator, Denise.


Procedure for Starting Interpreter Services


1.Contact the Interpreter Coordinator, JoAn Joseph Peters, at (310) 434-4273, TDD, (310) 434-4497V, or Joseph-Peters_Jo_An@smc.edu.Tell her you want to make an appointment with a counselor to request services. IF YOU WANT SERVICES, YOU MUST SEE A COUNSELOR!

2. Bring proof of your hearing loss (an audiologic evaluation) to the appointment

3. At the appointment, talk to the counselor to discuss the classes you want. The counselor will also discuss the services you want, like Interpreters or Captioners.

4. The counselor will tell you how to register for the classes you want (you can apply for SMC and register for classes online at www.smc.edu).

5. The counselor will give your schedule of classes to the Interpreter Coordinator, JoAn. She will set up services for your classes.
