STEPS BEFORE YOU SIGN UP FOR CLASSES

If you are certain that you wish to attend Santa Monica College , please follow this checklist carefully:

  • 1. File Santa Monica College application at SMC website, www.smc.edu. For assistance you may visit the Welcome Center next to the cafeteria.
  • 2. After the SMC application is completed, you will be assigned an SMC student ID number. Be sure you write it down. __________________________________
  • 3. Print the signature page and turn it in to Admissions, in person or by mail.
  • 4. Complete on-line orientation. http://www.smc.edu/orient/
  • 5. After completing on-line orientation you may check your enrollment date. That is the date you sign up for classes; it is not the date of your counseling appointment. To find out your enrollment date you must

• Click on www.smc.edu

• Click on Admissions

• Click on Student Self-Service system

• Enter your student ID number and

password (your six digit birthdate)

• Click on Enrollment date/time

  • 6. Complete English/Math placement test in Liberal Arts Building, Room 109. No appointment is necessary. Be sure to bring your SMC ID number and picture I.D. with you. For more information http:/smc.edu/assessment.
  • 7. Review the schedule of classes carefully to see what classes you may be interested in taking. The schedule is available on-line at www.smc.edu or may be purchased in the bookstore.
  • 8. Make an appointment with a Disabled Student Center counselor either in person (SSC 101A) or by calling (310)434-4265
  • 9. Be sure to bringmedical information with diagnosis or High School IEP to verify your disability and your placement scores to your first appointment with a DSPS counselor.
  • 10. If you are a client of the Department of Rehabilitation, bring your IPE to your counseling appointment.
  • 11. Discuss priority enrollment date with your SMC counselor________________

Since classes fill up quickly, be sure to sign up for classes on your priority date.

  • 12. Complete FAFSA application and/or fee waiver-Board of Governor’s Grant and return to Financial Aid office in Administration Building . Bring income verification to financial aid office.
  • 13. Contact EOPS at (310) 434-4268 if you are eligible for financial aid or BOGG.
  • 14. If necessary, make another appointment with your Disabled Student Center counselor for additional assistance in finalizing your schedule prior to signing up for classes.

#2 SIGN UP FOR YOUR CLASSES

A CHECKLIST

  • 1. Enroll for classes by phone at (310) 434-4333 or through SMC website

• Click on www.smc.edu

• Click on Admissions

• Click on Student Self-Service system

• Enter your student ID number and

password (your six digit birthdate)

• Click on Enrollment /Records

  • 2. Prior to the beginning of the term students have a limited time to pay their fees. If you wish to postpone your fee payment, be sure to click, “Postpone My Fees”. If you don’t click to postpone fees and fail to pay within the time allotted you risk being dropped from your courses or prevented from enrolling in the next term.
  • 3. After paying for classes, obtain an SMC student ID card at Station “D”
  • 4. Be sure to check dates and deadlines for a refund as well as deadlines to drop a class. It is critical to pay attention to deadlines to avoid “W”s on your transcripts and poor grades. Deadlines are posted in the Schedule of Classes and also on-line at www.smc.edu
  • 5. Buy your books at the Bookstore or online at http://bookstore.smc.edu/
  • 6. It is your responsibility to initiate requests for accommodations with your Disabled Students Center counselor. As soon as you enroll in classes, make an appointment with your DSPS counselor to discuss and/or arrange for academic adjustments.
