COUNSELING
New Students:
Your first step in receiving the academic
adjustments you need is to make an appointment to see a DSP&S counselor.
Here are some helpful hints for your first
appointment:
Counseling
sessions are 45 minutes for new students and are available by appointment
only. Schedule early. Appointments fill up quickly.
Come fifteen
minutes early to your appointment to fill out your DSPS application.
You may also
download your DSPS application from our website at www.smc.edu/disabledstudent/.
Fill it out, and bring it with you to your first appointment
Be ready to
discuss your specific goals and your needs. If it helps you, make a
list of your questions.
Be aware of
current dates and deadlines. You can find them in the printed or online
class schedule.
Continuing Students:
Helpful hints to prepare for your appointment
with a counselor.
Plan ahead!!! Have a list of questions ready when you see your counselor.
Counseling
appointments for continuing students are 30minutes.
If you are
going to be late, or if you need to cancel and reschedule your appointment,
call the front desk at 310/434-4265 and let us know right away.
If you are
more than ten minutes late you may lose your appointment and will need
to reschedule for another time.
For course
evaluations of classes taken at other schools, bring official course
descriptions and transcripts to your counseling appointment.
Make sure
that you come in every semester for academic adjustments. They are NOT
automatically renewed. Every semester your class load changes, therefore
your academic adjustments adapt to the classes in which you are currently
enrolled.
Be aware of
current dates and deadlines. You can find them in the current printed
or online class schedule.
How do I know when to register?
Plan ahead!!!
You are eligible for priority
registration for spring and fall semesters.
You will be able to register early at the beginning of the registration
period. This is NOT automatic. Make an EARLY appointment --approximately one month before registration begins-- to see your counselor to request priority registration.
Priority registration is not available for Winter or Summer sessions. However, you should still come in early and see your counselor to plan your classes and to request your academic adjustments.
Check online at www.smc.edu/admissions/studentselfservicesystem
for your registration date.
Fall registration
begins the first week of June.
Winter registration
begins the second week of November.
Spring
registration also begins the second week of November.
Summer
registration begins the first week of June.
