Student Judicial Affairs – The Team Who we are: The Disciplinarian, her Staff and the Ombudsperson operate under the auspices of the Vice President of Student Services. What we do: The Office of Student Judicial Affairs, formerly the Disciplinarian’s
Office, is a place to go to have problems solved, reach agreements, and to
gather information. We take a
positive, comprehensive and proactive approach and provide a place for
students and faculty to receive information regarding student conduct,
academic honesty, behavior/anger management, before these concerns become
discipline problems. It is
crucial that faculty know they are being supported in dealing with
extremely challenging and often disruptive students.
We receive student referrals from faculty, staff and Campus Police. Our resolution process sometimes includes referrals to the college Health Services Office. We often rely on the professional consultation of Psychological Services to provide an expert opinion. The Disciplinarian, Judith Penchansky, serves the campus as facilitator of investigations of violations of the Student Conduct Code – AR 4410. Her primary role as Disciplinarian is to oversee the Discipline staff, to interview students, to work hand-in-hand with the faculty, to communicate regularly with Campus Police to participate in the Appeals process and to make final decisions regarding the outcome of discipline cases. She has initial authority to suspend students for Student Conduct Code violations. The staff of Student Judicial Affairs assists the Disciplinarian in the Administrative Complex, room 103 (office of the Vice President of Student Affairs). This team compiles documents, interviews witnesses, completes investigations and reports their findings to the Disciplinarian. Current team members are Marilyn Goodrich, Administrative Assistant, and Ombudspersons Dr. Tina Feiger and Dr. Lucy Kluckhohn. Ms. Goodrich handles all correspondence, establishes and maintains all files, books appointments, and organizes all documents, including documents in preparation for Hearings, Appeals, and other presentations. In addition to "disciplining" students, our role has also been to work with Campus Police and the Ombudsperson to proactively reach out to departments and provide informational presentations. Traditionally we have made presentations during campus flex days. Throughout the school year, we also make presentations to a variety of Counseling 11 classes, in particular to international students. We also teach two Counseling courses, Conflict Resolution, COUN 17, and Behavior Management, COUN 18. The Ombudsperson acts as a listening ear, conciliator, mediator, and resource for students with problems involving other students, faculty, and administrators. Responsibilities also include investigating grade disputes and other various complex issues. | |
