About Emeritus College

What is Emeritus?

Emeritus College, started in 1975, is a college for seniors. A program of Santa Monica College, Emeritus serves over 3,400 students annually and offers over 160 free classes of interest to seniors. All classes are held during the day at more than 20 convenient locations throughout the community or at our home base on Second Street. The name Emeritus refers to people “retired with honor.” All seniors are welcome. Goals: The goals of the program are to provide education and mental and physical stimulation in the follow areas:

Consumer Information: financial management, entitlements, auto repair, home repair, current events, theater review and home gardening
Skill Development: calligraphy, computer training, writing, language and fine arts
Personal Growth: coping with aging, medical information, assertiveness training and widow support
Self Expression: performing arts classes in music and theater, fine arts, writing
Health Maintenance: aerobic, strength, flexibility, meditative classes including stress management, yoga, qi gong and tai chi
Social interaction with your peers: Meet new friends in the tour classes for art and gardening, music and performing arts appreciation.
