Basic Academic Reading Skills
ESL 17 is a 3-unit course designed for intermediate non-native speakers of English to improve their reading skill and increase their pleasure in reading. Students will improve their reading speed, comprehension, and critical thinking skills by learning strategies such as previewing, skimming, scanning, and interpreting meaning from context. They will learn how to distinguish topics, main ideas, details, facts and opinions. In addition, they will learn how to identify an author’s purpose and tone. They will learn how to draw inferences and recognize patterns of organization.
