Dale Ride Internship Program

2005 Dale Ride interns (l-r) Ethan Lacey, Anthony Allman, Mariana Harta-Cappelli and Hailey Gilmore.

Santa Monica College Foundation’s Dale Ride Internship Program was established in 1991 to:

• Enable students to participate in legislative and administrative processes and politics locally, statewide or nationally, in governmental or non-governmental agencies;

• Broaden students’ awareness of and interest in pursuing public service as a career;

• Complement the curriculum for political science and other disciplines related to public service/public policy with practical internship experience.

Sponsor Martin Sosin and Intern Hailey Gilmore.

For the last 3 years, four interns have been chosen for selected positions in Washington D.C., including the Senate and the White House as well as other prestigious arenas of service.

Students are invited to apply for the eight-week summer internships at the end of the previous calendar year. Applicants are then interviewed and selected by a committee of faculty, Foundation representatives, and Dale Ride family representatives. (The program was established to honor the memory of Dr. Dale Ride, educator and political activist on behalf of Santa Monica College for more than 33 years.)

Interim SMC President Tom Donner and Intern Mariana Horta Cappelli.

The SMC Foundation invites individual and corporate sponsors to underwrite the $5000 per student program. Sponsors have included Verizon, the Stratton-Petit Foundation, US Bank and the President’s Circle.
