Welcome to Global Citizenship at Santa Monica College!

globalsmc.jpg To be a global citizen, one is knowledgeable of peoples, customs and cultures in regions of the world beyond one's own; understands the interdependence that holds both promise and peril for the future of the global community; and is committed to combining one’s learning with a dedication to foster a livable, sustainable world.

-- Santa Monica College definition of Global Citizenship, adopted 2008

The deadline for entering our 3rd annual Student Research Symposium and Tournament is May 11. Click here for more details.

About the Initiative

Launched in 2007, the Global Citizenship initiative at Santa Monica College develops and promotes activities that prepare students for the 21st Century. Such preparation includes awareness of the social, cultural, and environmental transformations taking place in our world of unprecedented global interconnection; attitudes of tolerance and respect for diversity and of anticipation and adaption toward global change; skillful command of the technologies that revolutionize the way we obtain information and interact with each other; and a commitment to act as responsible global citizens through political engagement, entrepreneurship, and community service.

The Global Citizenship Council meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday throughout the academic year. All are welcome to attend our meetings and otherwise participate in the initiative. The 2011–2012 schedule of meetings is as follows:

In addition to this website, you can keep track of SMC Global Citizenship on Facebook, Twitter, and our Tumblr blog—all under the "globalSMC" name.

Events

Two major events highlight the Global Citizenship calendar each year. In November, International Education Week presents a series of lectures, films, and a midday fair that celebrate our global connections; the dates for this year's IEW are November 14–18, 2011. In late May or June, the Student Research Symposium and Tournament features work students have completed for any of their classes, in any subject, that illustrates ideas of global citizenship. This year's event will take place June 1, with a deadline for entries of May 11. Please note that an entry application is due December 9 for fall-semester projects, although the final project to be judged can be revised and submitted as late as the May 11 deadline. Annual Theme

The annual Global Citizenship theme for 2011-12 is Health, Wellness, and the Pursuit of Happiness. As with the preceding years' themes, the goal is to help students and faculty connect their work, across disciplinary boundaries and inside and outside the classroom, by offering a tangible set of issues that illustrate the more abstract ideas of globalism and citizenship. This will continue in 2012-13 with our fourth annual theme: Poverty and Wealth, Want and Waste: The Uneveness of Globalization.
