SMC Malibu Campus Takes Step Forward The Malibu Public Facilities Authority (MPFA) has authorized SMC to negotiate an agreement with the County of Los Angeles to build a satellite campus on county-owned land in Malibu’s Civic Center. The agreement would also allow for the construction of a new Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department substation as part of the building improvements. More>>

SMC Alumni in the News The Wall Street Journal did a fascinating Page 1 story about Crisantos Hajibrahim, an SMC alumnus and U.S. Marine veteran who, with his wife, opened "the first Arabic food stand on a U.S. military base."
The food stand is at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, with a daytime population of 60,000 hungry Marines and civilians.

Student Essay Included in “This I Believe"
SMC student Cherish Mumme’s essay, “Childhood Dreams Shaping the Future,” has been posted on “This I Believe”. Her essay was done as a class assignment last fall in professor Gordon Dossett’s English class. This I Believe, Inc. was founded in 2004 as a not-for-profit that engages youths and adults from all walks of life in writing, sharing and discussing brief essays about the core values that guide their daily lives. It’s based on a 1950s radio program hosted by acclaimed journalist Edward R. Murrow.
SMC Board of Trustees Named “EcoHeroes”
The SMC Center for Environmental & Urban Studies last week honored the Board of Trustees as “EcoHeroes.” The Board was honored for approving the Solar Photovoltaic installers training program, allocating funds for energy efficiency and solar energy projects, passing the Zero Waste Events policy, and more.

SMC Receives $100,000 for Scholarship for Women in Nursing, Education The SMC Foundation received a $100,000 donation from the Santa Monica Bay Chapter of the American Association of University Women for a new scholarship to be earmarked for women students pursuing careers primarily in nursing and education.

SMC’s “Wounded Warrior” SMC’s “Wounded Warrior”
Army veteran and SMC alumnus Dan Smee is featured on “Wounded Warrior”. His story is all too familiarly sad, but it is inspiring in how he dealt with his “invisible” wounds and even wrote a book, “Totally American,” that presents a unique approach to achieving success through optimism and resiliency.
