Three types of Internship Programs at SMC
  • Internship
  • Cooperative Work Experience
  • General Internship
  • Internship and Cooperative Work Experience (CWE):
    • On-the-job learning relating to students' educational or career goals
    • Usually a maximum of 4 units per semester
    • Allows a total of 16 units overall.
    • Students are required to enroll in 7 or more units at SMC during the fall and spring semesters including the internship class.  During the summer and winter sessions, students are required to enroll in an extra 3-unit class in addition to at least one-unit of internship credit.  Students may avoid the unit requirement during the summer and winter sessions if they have been enrolled in 7 units at SMC the previous semester.
    • CWE often requires concurrent enrollment in another class in the major.
    General Internship:
    • Does not need to be related to students' educational or career goals.
    • On-the-job learning.
    • Allows a maximum of 3 units per semester.
    • Allows a total of 6 units overall
    • Students are required to enroll in 7 or more units at SMC during the fall and spring semesters including the internship class.  During the summer and winter sessions, students are required to enroll in an extra 3-unit class in addition to at least one-unit of internship credit.  Students may avoid the unit requirement during the summer and winter sessions if they have been enrolled in 7 units at SMC the previous semester.
