INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

There are three types of Internship Programs:
(1) General Internship
(2) Internship
(3) Cooperative Work Experience
- Students enhance classroom learning in these
programs by working on on-campus or off-campus jobs.
Students achieve learning
objectives through
work experiences designed
to help them expand their career options, learn about the "work
culture" and develop new job skills.
- Students earn college credit based on
the number of internship hours worked. Each
unit of college credit requires 75 paid or 60 unpaid (volunteer)
hours of work per semester.

Students are required to enroll in 7 or more units at SMC during
the fall and spring semesters including the internship class.
During the summer and winter sessions, students are required to
enroll in an extra 3-unit class in addition to at least one unit
of internship credit. Students may avoid the extra unit
requirement during the summer and winter sessions if they have
been enrolled in 7 units at SMC in the previous semester.

GENERAL INTERNSHIP
The GENERAL INTERNSHIP need not be related
to the student's educational or career goal. It is designed to enhance
classroom learning by providing students with on-the-job work experience.
- Students must arrange an approved internship
prior to enrolling in this class.
- All students are required to attend an INTERNSHIP
ORIENTATION meeting at the beginning of the General Internship.
Call the Internship Program for meeting times.

the fall and spring semesters including the internship class.

enroll in an extra 3-unit class in addition to at least one unit

INTERNSHIP
The internship must be related to the students
educational or career goal. It is designed to help students
combine college curriculum with on-the-job learning experiences
and is for students beginning, changing or advancing in a career,
or moving ahead in a major.

- All students are required to attend
an Internship Orientation Meeting

BIOL 90, BIOLOGY INTERNSHIP 2 UNITS

The Internship Program is designed to provide
the student with "real-life" experience in a biology environment.
Students will work with a local company to apply academic biology
principles.

This course acquaints the student with the career
fields of radio, television and other media related industries and
services. Students spend a minimum of eight hours per week interning
with a pre-arranged broadcast media or support facility.

Students will work with local schools, professional dance organizations
and producers, dance advertisers, and dance and physical therapists
to apply academic and/or production principles.

Students will relate their journalistic experience
to real life by working for a newspaper or magazine for a summer
or semester. Academic credit is based on a written report or research
paper relating to the student's internship experience. Enrollment
must be concurrent with an approved internship assignment.

Students will relate their academic experience
to local, state, or national governments by working in a governmental
agency for a summer or semester. Academic credit is based on a written
report or research paper relating the student's internship experience
and an oral examination. Enrollment must be concurrent with an approved
internship assignment.

The Internship Program is designed to provide
the student with "real-life" experience in a work environment that
might incorporate aspects of sociology, political science, history,
psychology, and anthropology. Students will work with a company
or agency to obtain experience.

COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE
Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) must be related
to the students educational or career goal. CWE work experiences
are designed to enhance student learning.
- Students must enroll in at least seven units
during the fall and spring semesters, which may include the CWE
units.
