ARTS EDUCATION OUTREACH
In Fall 1999, the College began hosting The Madison Performance
Series, free noon-time concerts at the Madison Campus specifically
designed so that local private and public school students can attend.
Each event has included the bringing of children from Santa Monica
and Los Angeles area schools to the site to interact with the performers.
Now in its seventh season, the series has formalized a relationship
with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District that includes
a City of Santa Monica grant for transportation, and additional
10:30am arts education children’s assemblies preceding the
public event at noon.
To date, more than 20,000 children from the Santa Monica-Malibu
Unified School District have attended Madison Site Theater performances.
Additionally, members of SMC’s Emeritus College and other senior
groups have attended performances.
The concerts have also included the performance of the Santa Monica
High School Chamber Orchestra and the Palisades High Chamber Singers and the Manzanar Youth Choir,
fulfilling the vision of exposing young student performers to professional
groups who act as mentors and artistic role models.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Community-based art projects at the Madison site have included a
mural project for the visual arts, completed in 1999, involving
students from SMC’s Emeritus College and Community Services
program, under the direction of muralist Elizabeth Sadoff; and instruction
provided by ETC, a musical theater children’s program, to introduce
young people to musical theater in an after school program.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
To continue strengthening the arts education program at the Madison
campus, the College is proposing to build a new 541-seat theater
at the historic Madison site. Our hope is to create a resource that
is compatible with its neighborhood and an asset to college students,
high school and elementary students, neighbors, and community members.
To assure success in achieving these goals, the College has developed
and is now engaged in a comprehensive outreach plan that involves
broad community participation and dialog.
Of greatest importance to us are our neighbors. We have already
met with our neighbors on several occasions, ranging from knocking
on doors and introducing ourselves to public meetings and workshops.
Throughout the planning process, we will continue with this effort,
to make sure we understand and respond to all concerns. With guidance
from neighbors, neighborhood and community groups, and adjacent
businesses, we expect to create a facility that will be a much-celebrated
cornerstone for all.
As an educational facility, the Madison Site Theater project will
require final approval by the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees.
In order to ensure full public participation, the Board has approved
the following procedures:
Public Notification. Written information about the project
including notices of all meetings and workshops will be provided
to all members of our community. Community members can also stay
informed throughout the process by means of a priority mailing list,
an e-mail notification program, and through this website.
Neighborhood Outreach. We are meeting with the immediate
neighbors of the project, as well as any interested neighborhood
organizations, to listen to and gain information about any concerns.
Community Review. The College will review building plans
and designs with a wide audience of College and community groups
before presenting final plans to the College Board of Trustees for
approval. The College will provide a minimum of two community-wide
workshops on this project.
Governmental Approvals. The College will obtain all legally
required governmental approvals for the project and contract for
the independent preparation of all environmental reviews under CEQA
and NEPA.
Staff Resources. The College has hired two consultants, Dennis
Zane and Eileen Hecht, to assist with the public outreach and notification.
Both consultants are well-known in the community and familiar with
community expectations and concerns.
Office of State Architect. The College will submit building
plans to the Office of State Architect for structural safety, access
compliance, and fire and life safety approvals.
