AFRICAN RHYTHM CONCERT TO KICK OFF 2001-02 MADISON PERFORMANCE SERIES

Santa Monica College’s Madison campus will launch its third season of exciting arts education and community performances at noon Oct. 10 with an African Rhythm concert featuring Prince Diabaté.

The free concert is held at noon at the Madison site on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. Parking is free.

Prince Diabaté, who hails from Guinea, is considered one of the leading masters of kora, a West African instrument. Also a vocalist, he has won critical acclaim for his dazzlingly fast technique and dynamic stage presence.

The concert is part of the California Arts Council Statewide Celebration of the Arts. It is underwritten by U.S. Bank.

This is the third year of a free eclectic performance series that has attracted thousands of people, including school children. In the past two years, events have included world music artists, opera singers, dancers, and writers in a salon setting.

Other concerts scheduled in fall include the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Brass Trio, tap dancer Mark Mendonca, and a children’s opera called Friday Night at Hodges’ Café.

For information, call (310) 434-3431.
