SMC Foundation Allocates $1 Million to Madison Theater
Dustin HoffmanThe SMC Foundation has allocated $1 million of undesignated funds to the college's Dustin Hoffman-backed Madison Theater Project, a proposed 500-seat education and performing arts facility. The gift brings the total raised for the project to $4.5 million.

Reiner Rockel Seeking to provide apparel workers higher pay and better opportunities in an industry facing increased overseas competition and automation, SMC has launched a $200,000 program to train low-wage employees in computerized knitwear production.

Cultural eclecticism has marked SMC over the last month. Teenagers in our Spring Opera Intensive performed a "hipopera;" our literary magazine, Santa Monica Review, was honored at Beyond Baroque; and Cuban art songs were featured in a CubaFest 2002 concert.

In Memoriam
Emeritus College creative writing instructor Douglas F. Muir died March 9 in Irvine at the age of 69. An award-winning novelist and documentary filmmaker, he taught poetry, creative writing and film classes at UCLA, UC Irvine and other campuses besides SMC.
