Math
professor Andrew Nestler
has been receiving national and media attention for his use
of the popular animated television series The
Simpsons in his classroom and
in lectures he gives to other mathematicians. Along with Sarah
J. Greenwald of Appalachian
State University in North Carolina, Nestler has given talks
-- most recently at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont -- on
the extensive use of math as a source of humor in The
Simpsons. Nestler was also featured
in a March 19 Los Angeles Times

SMC people were well represented among the
honorees at Sunday's Community Unity Awards given by The League
of United Latin American Citizens, Santa Monica-Venice Bay
Area. Three of the eight honorees have SMC connections --
student Annie Bird, former Student
Trustee; English professor Daniel Cano;
and Personnel Commissioner Dolores Press.
Three counselors and a former counseling
assistant with SMC's Student Success Project made a presentation
in March at the American College Personnel Association's annual
conference in Long Beach on "Expanded College Orientations
Make a Difference for Community Colleges, Too!" The presenters
were Melissa Edson, faculty leader
of the Student Success Project; Susan Maiorano,
former counseling assistant and current UC Berkeley student;
Merril Simon, adjunct counselor;
and Esau Tovar, retention counselor.
Simon and Tovar also gave a presentation earlier this month
at a statewide community college conference on career counseling.
Louis Fantasia,
KCRW theater critic and actor/director/teacher, has a new
book out called Instant Shakespeare,
A proven Technique for Actors, Directors and Teachers.

Miriam Kafka,
longtime Emeritus College volunteer and current chair of the
Emeritus College Advisory Board, will be honored next month
with an Older American Recognition Award from the Los Angeles
County Commission on Aging.
Steve Peterson,
acting computer lab supervisor, has been elected president
of the SMC Management Association for 2002. Other officers
are Lee Finch, dean of student services,
vice president; Lisa Rose, District/Board
of Trustees office coordinator, secretary; and George
Prather, director of auxiliary services, treasurer.
English professor Mario
Padilla won an honorable mention in the 2001 Benjamin
Saltman Poetry Award sponsored by Red Hen Press for his second
collection of poetry entitled Postcards.
This is a national contest for unpublished poetry collections.
Adjunct English professor Julia
Stein's third book of poetry, Shulamith,
will be published by West End Press in May. She will give
a reading from the book at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at Midnight
Special bookstore on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica.
A joint SMC-Santa Monica Place program
that provided job skills training to mall employees, job placement
and referrals, and career counseling to the general public
is an honorable mention recipient of the California Community
College Association for Occupational Education's Excellence
in Partnership Award for 2002. The two-year program was run
jointly by the shopping center and SMC's Office of Workforce
& Economic Development, under the direction of Joy
Tucker, director of customized
training.
