SMC purchased the 10.4-acre BAE Systems property at the Santa Monica Airport for $30 million. The land and buildings will be used as a satellite campus and for additional student parking.

Music professor David Goodman was named the recipient of the first Ilona Katz Chair of Excellence, receiving $5,000 a year for each of the next three years to be used for projects of his choice.

Seven SMC students served summer internships at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Washington, D.C., the only group of community college students ever admitted to the competitive program. Pictured at the NIST campus are Quan Chau, Doug Chau, Omid Noorani, Buckley Mitchell, Salima Hamirani, Amarpreet Kaur, and Kimberly Kaleas.

SMC broke ground on the $23.6 million Library Expansion and Modernization project, expected to be completed in 2003. Pictured at the groundbreaking ceremony are Assistant Dean of Learning Resources Mona Martin, General Advisory Board President Herb Rose, State Librarian Kevin Starr, and SMC Foundation President Graham Pope.

Biology professor Douglas Allan was named recipient of the first Avaya Inc. & Anixter Inc. Chair of Excellence, receiving $5,000 a year for three years for projects of his choice.

Construction on a new 486-space parking structure began this summer and is proceeding at a brisk pace. Completion is expected in spring 2002.
