SMC purchased the 10.4-acre BAE Systems
property at the Santa Monica Airport for $30 million. The
land and buildings will be used as a satellite campus and
for additional student parking.

SMC students and employees gathered
in the Amphitheatre Sept. 20 for "A Moment of Remembrance"
in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 national tragedy.

Music professor David Goodman
was named the recipient of the first Ilona Katz Chair of Excellence,
receiving $5,000 a year for each of the next three years to
be used for projects of his choice.

Technology Projects Manager Bob Dammer
received his Recognition of Excellence Award for Managers
at the 2001 Commencement.

About 100 people attended SMC's first-ever
reception in Washington, D.C., held on Capitol Hill to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of its Dale Ride Internship Program.

SMC started its Vermicomposting Project,
using worms to turn food waste into organic fertilizer.

Theatre arts professor Terrin Adair-Lynch
as Lucy was one of the many performers that delighted a sold-out
audience at SMC's first-ever "Follies."

Plans to replace the auditorium at
the Madison campus with a 500-seat theatre gained momentum
in 2001, as fundraising proceeded at a brisk pace and the
architectural design process began. Pictured here is one of

Seven SMC students served summer internships
at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Washington,
D.C., the only group of community college students ever admitted
to the competitive program. Pictured at the NIST campus are

SMC broke ground on the $23.6 million
Library Expansion and Modernization project, expected to be

Construction on a new 486-space parking
structure began this summer and is proceeding at a brisk pace.
Completion is expected in spring 2002.
