So far, the SMC Board of Trustees has approved
property purchases and contracts for related services that
total $47.6 million.
The major planning focus of the college
has been on a new building for SMC’s widely praised
Emeritus College for older adults, currently under construction;
renovation of the Main Stage; and a new Liberal Arts building.
The $8.65 million Emeritus building in downtown
Santa Monica is expected to be completed next spring, and
work on the Main Stage and Liberal Arts projects is scheduled
to begin next August.
Construction of a Literacy Center on SMC-owned
property on Pico Boulevard at 14th Street is expected to begin
in fall 2003.
Money has also been spent on the purchase
of the 10.4-acre BAE property at Santa Monica Airport that
will eventually be converted to a major SMC satellite campus.
SMC is currently leasing back the property to BAE.
Funds are also being spent to update
the SMC Facility Master Plan, which will serve as a blueprint
for development of the campus over the next decade or so and
will guide the campus as it implements Measure U.
