Dr. David Goodman

(Music Theory, Composition, Music Technology, Online Music Appreciation)

Composer, pianist and conductor - has composed works for orchestra, chorus, solo voice, jazz ensemble, brass choir, electronic media, theater and film and has received awards from The American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, ASCAP, the National Orchestral Association ,and Who's Who in America. After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin College in 1975 he went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of California, Berkeley where he studied composition and conducting. He has taught in the music departments at UC Berkeley, Pomona College, and UCLA, and in 1997 was appointed to the faculty of Santa Monica College as a Professor of Theory, Composition and Music Technology. In addition to his career as a teacher he has worked in the music and film industry as a composer, conductor, session player, orchestrator, arranger, and vocal coach. In 2001 he was awarded the first SMC Ilona Katz Chair of Excellence and from 2002 to 2006 was the  Music Composition Panelist for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. In August of 2007 he was awarded his second Ilona Katz Chair of Excellence from the Santa Monica College Foundation.

Dr. Yulia Kozlova

(Class Piano, Applied Piano, Music Fundamentals)

Yulia Kozlova is an active solo and collaborative recitalist. She has concertized in Russia, the United States and Europe. Yulia has given lecture-recitals for the College Music Society on national and regional levels. She is very active as an adjudicator and consultant to area music teachers. Yulia Kozlova received her undergraduate degree from Novgorod State College of Music, Master’s Degree in Piano Pedagogy and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from The Ohio State University. Yulia has taught in the music departments at California State University, Bakersfield, Marshall University and the Ohio State University.

Arnold Lessing (retired 2007)

Arnold Lessing has been teaching at Santa Monica College for over twenty years. His teaching methods and enthusiasm have resulted in a very popular guitar program. He has performed in films, recordings ,television and on the concert stage. His Fine Arts degree is from UCLA.

Alvin E. Lyles (retired 2004)

Alvin E. Lyles received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. While he attended college, he played bassoon in the Northern Arizona Symphony and Summer Festival Orchestra. Lyles joined the SMC music faculty in 1975. He has developed an outstanding jazz series featuring the finest jazz musicians in Southern California. Lyles has also served as SMC Concert Band director. He is an active adjudicator and clinician for high school and college bands.

Dr. James Martin

(Music Appreciation, Theory) B.S. Pennsylvania State University, M.Mus. Indiana University, D.M.A., University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

Conductor/Music Director of symphonic, opera, ballet, musical theatre orchestra, including engagements at Lincoln Center, Chicago, San Francisco. Composer and orchestrator of classical, contemporary and popular musical styles. Founder/Artistic Director of Amara Ensemble: Professional flutist, has performed with the Los Angeles Opera, Joffrey Ballet, Los Angeles Concert Orchestra. Professor of flute CSUN, and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Received awards for "Who's Who in American Teachers." Enjoys teaching students of all ages. Uses a combined humanities-related arts approach to stimulate learning.

Joan Mills (retired 2001)

Joan Mills, Professor of Piano at Santa Monica College, has taught at the University of Oklahoma, CSU Humboldt, City University of New York and New Jersey State University. During summers, she taught at the Meadow Brook Music Festival (Detroit) and the Usdan Center for Performing Arts (NYC). A native of Charleston, S. C., she has appeared frequently in recital and as soloist with orchestra in New York, Canada, California, the Carolinas and Georgia.

Dr. James E. Smith

Professor James E. Smith

James E. Smith, (chairman): B.M. Oberlin; M.M. Northwestern; D.M.A., USC. Before coming to SMC he held teaching positions at Oberlin and Sweet Briar College. He is Director of Choral Activities and Conductor of the Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra. He has guest conducted numerous orchestral and choral groups in Southern California, and continues in his 36th year as Director of Music for the First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica.

Rhoda Tuit

Chair, Music Department

(Beginning and Intermediate Piano, Keyboard Improvisation)

Mrs. Tuit received a B. A. in Music from San Diego State College and a M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California. She has been a member of the SMC Music faculty since 1979 and has served on the Academic Senate and as chair of the Sabbatical Committee. She has performed in solo recitals, two-piano concerts, as an accompanist and with orchestra.

Frank Turner (retired 2008)

BA from UCLA, MA from CSULA. Principal trumpet with Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. Lead trumpet with Music Ads, Inc. and Intermountain Network Jingle Co. Travel in Eastern and Western Europe as founder and tour director for U.S. Honor Band and Choir. H.S. band director in Idaho and Oregon. Choral arranger. Outstanding Young Educator Award from Santa Monica Jay Cees. Directed SMC marching band in nationally televised NFL half-time shows, Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC, and El Carnival in Mazatlan. Conducted SMC production of "Once On This Island" at Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
