Harp - Major scales in any key two hands, four groups of four notes ascending and descending, in 3rds, 6ths, 10th, and 16ths. Arpeggios 7th chord arpeggios in any key, alternating hands, ascending and descending.

2.) Etudes such as Grandjany Etudes for the Harp, #3 and #5 from the 15 Preludes for the Harp (Salzedo s Method Book for the Harp)

3.) Examples or repertoire: One piece from Suite of Eight Dances by Carlos Salzedo, Dussek s Sonatina #4 from Six Sonatas, Tournier s #1,3, or 6 From Six Noels pour la harpe, Hovhaness Sonata.

4.) Sight-reading: from the two books of SKETCHES by Carlos Salzedo.

 

Keyboard

The following list is intended to indicate representative works for the first four undergraduate semesters, providing a smooth transition to a four-year music school. Other studies and solo compositions may be substituted for these representative works.

1.) The student should be able to play at a level required to perform the

following examples:

J.S. Bach: Preludes and Fugues from Well-Tempered Klavier; French Suites; English Suites; Partitas; Italian Concerto or other comparable works from the Baroque era..

Sonatas, Concertos, Variations by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert or other significant composers of the Classic or early Romantic eras.

Character pieces by Romantic composers such as Chopin, Liszt, Schumann or comparable works.

20th Century composition.

2.) Sight-reading examples: Mendelssohnís Songs without Words, Bach:

Preludes for WTC #2, Kabalevskyís 24 Preludes, Opus 38.

3.) All major and minor scales, 4 octaves hands together.

All major and minor arpeggios, 4 octaves hands together.

Cadences in all keys, major and minor.

Technical studies or Etudes, depending upon ability.

1.) Scales- all major and minor scales (ascending and descending in parallel

motion. Finger technique: legato and detached touches. Arpeggios: all

major and minor triads extending two octaves

2.) Etudes: Doppelbauer, Ten Etudes demonstrating pedal technique

3.) Sight reading: A four-part hymn or Bach chorale-harmonization in a key

using up to two sharps or flats. Various Romantic andanta trios

4.) Examples of repertoire: Bach, Orgelbuchlein, Pastorale, Canzona in D,

Little Fugue in G minor; Buxtehudeís Chorale Preludes, Gigue Fugue in C;

Brahmsí Chorale Preludes; Vaughan Williamsí Prelude on Rhosymedre;

Raphaelís Chorale Preludes.

Violin

1.) Scales and arpeggios in major and minor keys from various scale texts (Wessely Scale Manual, Flesch Scale System, etc). Add 6ths and octaves in three octave major and minor scales, hamonics.

2.) Three selections, representing various stylistic periods of music. These selections should be full-length pieces from the standard solo literature. Examples: Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Blochís Nigun, Bach Solo Sonatas and Partitas, Sarasate Spanish Dances.

3.) Etudes such as Rode 24 Caprices, Kreutzer, Mazas- Op.36 - Book two

4.) If any of the selections are taken from a multi-movement sonata or concerto, one movement of the piece sall suffice.

 

Viola

1.) Scales and arpeggios in major and minor keys, 3 octaves

2.) Three selections, representing various stylistic periods of music. These selections should be full-length pieces from the standard solo literature.

Examples: Mozart Divertimento in C, Viola Concerto in C Minor by J.C.Bach,

Rameau-Forbes Suite of 3 dances.

3.) Etudes such as 36 Studies for Viola Op. 20 Kayser, Rode, Krkeutzer (1-9)

4.) If any of the selections are taken from a multi-movement sonata or concerto, one movement of the piece shall suffice. Telemann, Handel, Hoffmeister, etc.

 

Cello

1.) Scalaes and arpeggios in major and minor keys, 4 octives. Hooked staccato bowings, multiple bowing.

2.) Three selections, representing various stylistic periods of music. These selections should be full-length pieces from the standard solo literature.

J.S. Bach Solo Suite #3, Granados Intermezzo, Bruch Kol Nidri, Faure Elegy, Apreves un Reve, Brahms Sonata E minor, Beethoven Sonata Op.5 #1, #2.

3.) Etudes such as Popper Studies, Franchomme, Cossman, Duport.

4.) If any of the selections are taken from a multi-movement sonata or concerto, on movement of the piece shall suffice. Boccherini, B-flat, G major, Tartini, D. major

 

Double Bass

1.) Scales and arpeggios in major and minor keys, 3 octaves

2.) Three selections, representing various stylistic periods of music. These selections should be full-length pieces from the standard solo literature.

Sonatas by Marcello, de Fesch, Falliard, Pergolesi, Handel and Vivaldi, Bach Cello Suite #4, Bouree, Beethoven Sonatina and Minuet. Contemporary Modal solos, Capuzzi Concerto.

3.) Etudes such as Simandl Book II, Storchh-Hrabe Book II, Nanny Kreutzer Etudes.

4.) If any of the selections are taken from a multi-movement sonata or concerto, one movement of the piece shall suffice. Orchestral Repertoire: Beethoven Symphonies 5 & 9, Recitative Elephant from Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals.
