Remember To Do These Things

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING IN THIS COURSE

IMPORTANT: You must first be officially registered for this course through the SMC Admissions Office and pay all applicable fees.

WARNING: DO NOT BUY USED COPIES OF THE COURSE CD-ROMS. Even though you may see used CDs advertised on Amazon.com and eBay, only a new, unused set of CDs will work for this course. Each CD-ROM set has a unique Serial Number that is exclusive to each individual student enrolled in the course. That serial number is linked to the Student College ID and records for each semester. Therefore, you will NOT be able to use copies of the CD-ROM that have been used by previous students in the course.

To successfully access this course, please follow these steps:

1. Purchase a clean, new, unused copy of the course CD-ROMs titled 'OnMusic Appreciation', second edition. You can purchase this two-CD set at the Front Desk of the SMC Bookstore, at the Madison Campus Bookstore, or order it online directly from Connect4Education. Please do not order from other online merchants as they are sometimes unreliable. Be sure to save the enclosed serial number slip. There is no 'paper' textbook for this class.

2. From your computer, go to http://www.connect4education.com. Then:

If your submission is valid, you will be taken to a confirmation page. On that page:

You will also receive a confirmation email message.

After completing the registration process, please follow these steps to access your online course:

Course Description and Goals

Music is art as well as science. To be able to comprehend it to the fullest we must, therefore, be able to appreciate both its emotional and intellectual content.

The aim of this course is very simple: To provide you with the tools for a basic understanding of music. It will not make you a musician or teach you how to write music. It will, however, give you the necessary background to understand what is going on technically when you are listening to music so that your experience is not limited to a wash of sound that produces a certain feeling.

The course will concentrate on a) The development of an attentive style of listening, b) The introduction and systematic study of the building blocks of music, and c) Enhancing awareness of the main musical styles of selected western and non-western cultures.

Note: You will need your own email account to participate in the course. You will not be able to use accounts belonging to other students because of the confusion this causes.

Course Format

Over the last four semesters, OnMusic has been offered using the incredible resources of the World Wide Web (WWW) for learning purposes. This format has challenged many traditionally held assumptions about teaching and learning. I will not go into the many ways this has happened. I will, rather, let this exciting adventure unfold and reveal its lessons to all of you.

There will be no lectures in this course. Actually, we will be at the opposite pole of the lecture paradigm. In this course, you are expected to communicate constantly with your classmates via electronic mail and Discussion Forums, and to cooperatively learn concepts, solve problems, and complete projects. This will be a major component of the learning experience.

This is a fully paperless class. All course materials, including the musical examples on CD-ROM, will be accessed electronically. Electronic mail and Discussion Forums will be the main source of information and interaction among us.

However, you must be fully conscious that despite its present state of sophistication, computer technology is, for many reasons, quite immature. Expect to encounter some hurdles along the way. Don't be frustrated by them. Learn from your shortcomings and those of the technologies that we will be using.

Once Inside the Course, Please Remember To Do These Things

Please make sure to listen carefully to all the music examples. These constitute the core of your learning experience in the course.

Please click the Tracking icon , whenever you are done with a class. You will find the tracking icon at the bottom of most pages.

Remember to set up your CD-ROM drive letter to match your computer settings. To do this, you need to know that letter. On a PC, double-click "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and make note of the letter beside the CD icon. The Mac Volume name is OnMusic1. Then, Go to CD-ROM setup, type that letter (or the Mac name) in the appropriate box, and click Setup.

Finally, it is very important that every time you finish a work session you click at the top of the screen. You can also click Logout on the bottom right corner of your student control panel.

Have fun!
