is pleased to announce a newly revised
Music Curriculum for Music Majors, with special emphasis for
students planning to transfer to a four-year college. This
program, which includes our new APPLIED MUSIC PROGRAM, which began in the Fall semester, 2001.
Taught by our highly
regarded faculty and qualified adjunct faculty from the Southern
California area, this program will allow you to transfer to most
four-year colleges at the 3rd-year level when completed. Besides
the required lower division theory and musicianship classes, we
will now offer private lessons to our students on any instrument
or discipline in which the student is qualified. Qualifications
are determined by audition. Once in the program, Applied Music
students will be required each semester to enroll in Music
92(Applied Lessons), Music 94(Concert Music Class), an SMC
ensemble group, and the appropriate theory and musicianship
classes.
If you have seriously
considered a major in music, here is your opportunity to develop
those skills at the Community College tuition rates ($20.00 per
unit) and then finish your degree at the institution of your
choice.
Santa Monica College is
ranked the #1 transfer institution to the University of
California, the University of Southern California, and Loyola
Marymount University, with articulation to many other schools.

ENTRY AUDITIONS FOR THE APPLIED MUSIC PROGRAM
Qualified students will be permitted to
take Applied Music for credit during the Fall and Spring
semesters at Santa Monica College. Auditions to qualify will take
place at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters, as announced.
Each applicant will submit an
application form and will be assigned an audition appointment
time. Depending on the performance specialty, an accompanist is
preferred, supplied by the applicant.
Each audition appointment will be
scheduled for ten minutes. Instrumentalists should perform at least two selections of
contrasting style or historical period. Vocalists should
sing from the Classical repertoire and include one art song or
aria in Italian. Pianists should perform one selection by Bach and two
additional contrasting pieces. (Memorization is required for
vocalists and pianists, but optional for others.) Composers should
present two contrasting compositions in either a live performance
or on a CD/cassette recording. They should also submit at least
three copies of the full score to each work (no lead sheets,
please). Jazz Vocalists should perform a classical art song, a slow jazz
ballad, and an up-tempo jazz standard. Jazz Instrumentalists
should perform a classical composition, a slow jazz ballad, and
an up-tempo jazz standard.
A minimum of three Santa Monica College
Music Faculty members will comprise the audition panel. More than
three panelists may be present. The panel will discuss each
audition, arrive at an immediate decision, and the applicant will
be informed by mail. Accepted applicants will receive one hour of
individual instruction each week of the semester from an approved
instructor. Applicants will also sign up for a major performing
ensemble, plus a class in concert music that meets twice weekly. A minimum of 5 hours of practice on campus each
week is required of each student accepted into the program.
The Theory and Musicianship classes are
not only required but are necessary to "keep afloat" in
the music program! The Music History sequence (Music 30 and 31),
while not required, is strongly recommended for any student
planning to be a Music Major.
Acceptance into the Applied Music Major
at Santa Monica College is based on the standard of acceptance
into first and second-year applied lessons at area four-year
music schools. These criteria will be judged by the faculty
panel.
