Instructions for new e-mail users: Faculty/Staff and Student

 

FACULTY/STAFF:

 

  1. Logging in:
  2. a. Your network logon account username (truncated to 20 characters) is <surname>_<firstname>
         (Note the use of the UNDERSCORE or shifted-hyphen character)
    b. Your password is (initially) SMC- plus the last four digits of your Social Security number
         (i.e., the capital letters "SMC" plus a hyphen symbol plus the last four digits of your SSN (e.g., SMC-1234)

    c. Your domain is SMC
     
  3. Your E-mail address:
  4. Your e-mail address is your username + @smc.edu (i.e., <surname>_<firstname>@smc.edu)
     
  5. Checking your E-mail:
  6. a. Use the e-mail program your department uses (Outlook or Exchange) to connect to the Faculty/Staff e-mail server
    b. You can also access your e-mail via your web browser by logging in at http://mail.smc.edu or http://faculty.smc.edu/exchange/
    c. faculty.smc.edu is the POP server, while smtp.smc.edu is the SMTP server, but only if dialed directly into campus (if not, use your ISP's SMTP server name)
    d. https://faculty.smc.edu is the ActiveSync server name, but for additional support, please contact your Smart PDA vendor.
     
  7. Checking your Class Roster:
  8. a. Access your class roster by clicking the "Class Rosters" link at http://www.smc.edu/apps/Page.asp?Q=Technology%20Resources
    b. Your class roster username (and password) is the same as your network logon account.
    e. If you have further questions about the Class Roster service, contact the Management Information Services department

  9. E-mail policies:
  10. a. Use e-mail for work-related communications
    (Personal use must not unduly consume resources or distract attention from your work)
    b. Keep the total size of all your messages within your quota (currently, about 750MB)
    (Note: you will be unable to send e-mail as long as you have exceeded a 600MB prohibit-send quota)
    (Note: you must re-delete messages in your Deleted Items folder to permanently purge them)
     
  11. Getting help:
a. E-mail POSTMASTER@smc.edu for issues related to e-mail
b. E-mail AccountServices@smc.edu for issues related to network logon accounts
c. E-mail Webmaster@smc.edu for issues related to your faculty homepage
d. E-mail HelpISIS@smc.edu for issues related to your class rosters or grade submissions
e. Dial in to campus from home (see http://www.smc.edu/tech/help_desk/HowTos/remoteaccess/)


 

 

STUDENT:

 

  1. Logging in:
  2. a. Your username (truncated to 20 characters) is <surname>_<firstname>_<middleinitial or middlename>
    b. Obtain (or re-reveal) your password by submitting the webform at http://accounts.smc.edu/
    c. Your domain is SMC
     
  3. Your E-mail address:
  4. Your e-mail address is your username + @student.smc.edu (e.g., ferber_edna_i@student.smc.edu)
     
  5. Checking your E-mail:
  6. a. Use any POP3 e-mail reader to retrieve/send e-mail messages (student.smc.edu is the POP server)
    b. You can also access your e-mail via your web browser by logging in at http://student.smc.edu/
     
  7. E-mail policies:
  8. a. Visit http://student.smc.edu/student_email_policy.htm for policies that apply to student e-mail use
    b. Note: You cannot change your network logon account password!
    c. Keep the total size of all your messages within your quota (currently, about 3MB)
    (Note: you will be unable to send or receive e-mail as long as you have exceeded your quota)
    (Note: you must re-delete messages in your Deleted folder to permanently purge them)
     
  9. Getting help:
a. Come to any student computer lab:
