Formerly known as British Honduras, 350 miles south of Cancun, Belize offers the best natural wonders. Its Great Barrier Reef (second largest in the world) provides an undersea experience enjoyed by only a few. Add to this Maya archaeological sites, excellent fishing and warmhearted people. As with previous trips, emphasis will lie on Natural History, cultural and marine biological investigations, field and beach lectures on the shoreline and multiple snorkeling dives will be an integral part of this exciting expedition. Earn SMC summer session credit while studying at Danvik Media School in the city of Drammen (30 minutes south of Olso). During your four weeks in Norway, visits will be arranged to Oslo, Lillehammer, Broadcasting and Journalism organizations, and a tour of the local town of Drammen. Santa Monica College faculty member Barbara Baird is an award-winning journalist with 21 years of experience in news reporting with the Los Angeles Times. Fellow SMC faculty member Frank Dawson has 20 years of television broadcast experience as an executive and producer with CBS Entertainment, Universal Studios and other mainstream media companies. This four-week summer study abroad program is scheduled to leave for Norway after a week of classes at SMC on June 27 and will return to United States on July 29, 2003. SEE VIENNA, VENICE, ROME AND NICE THIS SUMMER WITH SANTA MONICA COLLEGEWe invite you to join faculty members Frank Turner (Music) and Art Verge (Speech) on a three-week study tour to Vienna, Italy, and Nice this summer. Earn SMC summer session credit while studying and touring Europe’s most fabled cities. After one week of classes at Santa Monica College, you will fly to Vienna, the “World’s Capital of Music.” During the next eight days attend classes at the University of Vienna. Experience the sights and sounds of the city including a visit to Beethoven’s House, Schoenbrunn Palace, the Prater and a drive into the Vienna Woods. Travel to Salzburg with a stop en route at Mauthausen, the former Nazi Concentration Camp, and then continue to the Salzkammergut Lake District, the filming location for scenes from “The Sound of Music.” Leave Salzburg for a day, travel to Berctesgaden in nearby German. Here you will visit the “Eagle’s Nest,” Hitler’s former hideaway. After viewing his retreat, you have a walking tour of Salzburg including the birth house of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Then, journey south through the Alps into Northern Italy and spend the next few days in enchanting Venice. Explore the beautiful sights of Venice and its intricate canals, followed by a visit to the ancient city of Rome. See the fabled Roman Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Basilica of St. Peter. Next travel to Florence. Marvel at Michelangelo’s massive statue of David. Walk the Pone Veccio Bridge and view the marvelous masters at the Uffizi. Your study tour will come to an end by traveling along the beautiful coastline of the Italian and French Rivera. THE NATURAL HISTORY AND MARINE BIOLOGY OF TAHITIWe invite you to join faculty member Ed Tarvyd on a two-week study tour of Tahiti. The course consists of a mainland lecture series combined with a field trip to the Society Islands. A unique combination of biological, cultural, and historical interest, this course presents an opportunity to study first-hand the Islands of Tahiti, Moorea, and Huahine. An in-depth analysis of Polynesian island formation, island ecology, and human inhibition will be presented. Insular and coral reef ecosystems will be thoroughly analyzed. Multiple comparisons and contrasts between the Society Islands and the Hawaiian Islands will be made throughout the course. Two units of college credit (Biology 45A) will be earned. BELIZE - ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS OF ANCIENT MAYAWe invite you to join faculty member Brandon Lewis (Earth Science Department) for one month in the jungles of Belize. You will be excavating at the Late Classic site of Dos Barbaras (400-850AD). This course gives you the opportunity to excavate first-hand the houses, temples, and courtyards of the ancient Maya. The goal of this class is to train you in the standard archaeological excavation techniques (i.e., data recovery, laboratory, and mapping procedures). The field experience is supplemented with weekend trips to major archaeological sites. The course is offered for three college units. The approximate cost is $2,150. This includes roundtrip airfare, room and board, laundry services, internal transportation, admission to national parks/archaeological sites, and exit fees. SEE MAINLAND CHINA THIS SUMMER WITH SANTA MONICA COLLEGEWe invite you to join faculty members Dennis Frisch (History Department) and Molly Montgomery (Computer and Information Services Department) on a three-week study tour to China this summer. We shall visit six Chinese cities, including Beijing (visits to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and other sites), Xian (the site where the monumental Qin dynasty funerary terra cotta figures were found), Suzhou (famous for painting and silk production; we shall reach this city by boat on the Grand Canal), Hangzhou (a series of lectures and seminars are planned during the five day stay here), and Shanghai (the Oriental Television Tower), the third largest communications tower in the world), and the world-class Shanghai Municipal Museum plus factory visits and a township visit are included, and Nanjing (the incredible Yangtze River bridge and the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum). This three-week study tour begins June 25, 2003; we return to the United States on July 16, 2003. Two units of college credit may be earned.
