Signing up for an Online Class

Welcome to SMC Online, SMCOnline.org, the virtual campus of Santa Monica College.

We invite you to explore SMCOnline.org for more detailed information on the exciting courses, programs and services over the Internet from Santa Monica College.

Admission & Registration

Registration for New or Returning Students: You must apply for admission before registering. Go to http://SMCOnline.org, click on <Admissions & Registration>, and follow the instructions for completing the admission form. Print out the form, sign it (very important), and mail it to the specified address.

Registration for Continuing Students: If you are a Continuing Student at SMC, you already have a student I.D. number that you can use as your Login I.D. to register for online classes. Go to http://SMCOnline.org, find out about the online classes available by clicking on <Course Catalog>, then click on <Admission & Online Registration> and follow the instructions to register for your online classes.

Confirmation & Payment: Fees for online classes are the same as for other SMC classes. Once you have registered, you’ll receive confirmation by email of your courses, and instructions for how to pay for them (unless you pre-paid using a credit card at the time you sent in your online registration information).

Email Address: To apply or register for classes, it is imperative that student email addresses be accurate and up to date.

Course Catalog

SMCOnline are distance education courses conducted over the Internet. Some courses may require students to attend a portion of their class on the SMC campus, or enter a scheduled chatroom. Students are responsible for their own Internet access and computer resources.

Student Services

Advising: Questions about online courses, degrees, majors and programs can be answered through our website. Online students may access our Cyber–Counselors after they have enrolled in an online class.

Bookstore: SMCOnline students may purchase and pay for textbooks, supplies and other merchandise through the Santa Monica College online Bookstore.

Financial Aid: SMCOnline students have access to information and financial aid opportunities over the Internet.

International: SMCOnline welcomes international students from all countries of the world.

Tech Requirements

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

A PC or Macintosh computer. Your PC or Macintosh must have the following minimum specifications (WEBTV will not work).

Check individual courses for additional technical needs for software/hardware.

•   An Internet Service Provider (ISP). You’ll need an ISP. You’ll find a link to an extensive list at the SMCOnline site.

•   An E-Mail Address. Your ISP will provide you with an email address as part of your ISP account, or you can set up a free email account through SMC. Instructions for doing this can be found on SMC’s Website, www.smc.edu. To apply or register for classes and to maintain contact with your Professor(s), it is imperative that student email addresses be accurate and up to date.

•   A Java-Capable Browser and RealPlayer® Software. We support Microsoft® Internet Explorer and Netscape® Communicator. Go to http://smconline.org and click on <Tech Requirements> for the recommended versions. If you have an older version, you can download a newer one for free. If you’re not sure whether your browser has the capabilities you’ll need, test it at the SMCOnline site. To download the latest version of RealPlayer® software at no cost, click on the link at the SMCOnline site.

Demo Course

Free Demonstrations: To find out how a typical online class works, point your browser (with Java enabled) to http://smconline.org and click on <Demo Course>. Then take a few minutes to participate in the demo course, which is free. It’s a good way to get familiar with the many features an online class can offer and to try out a new way of learning.

Login

Enrolled students can access their class(es) by clicking on <Login> and entering their Student I.D. and password.

Note: It is the student’s responsibility to update their email address and to inform the Admissions Office of any change of address, phone number, and email address.
