This course is an introduction to women’s studies as an interdisciplinary academic discipline rooted in individual and collective action through leadership training, group activities, and networking opportunities on and off campus. Students will develop an understanding of a broad range of women’s experiences across class, racial/ethnic, and international lines, as well as initiate, design, and execute a field project which demonstrates what is learned in the classroom. Students will also gain experience serving effectively in formal and informal leadership roles in a range of settings, develop worthwhile visions of the future while inspiring others to join in, and utilize course content and activities to achieve personal and professional goals.

WOM ST 10, INTRODUCTION TO WOMEN’S STUDIES    3 UNITS

An interdisciplinary study of women and issues important to women in American Society, this course offers an analysis of women in public institutions and private realms and assumes the discussion of gender in the context of race and ethnicity. The class incorporates the academic perspectives of sociology, political science, history, psychology, and anthropology.

WOM ST 90, WOMEN’S STUDIES INTERNSHIP    2 UNITS

• Prerequisite: None.

The Internship Program is designed to provide the student with “real life” experience in a public or private organization concerned with issues relating to women. Students will work with the organization, agency, business, or institution (public or non-profit) to develop their understanding of and ability to apply the principles of women’s studies.

Students must arrange an approved Internship prior to enrolling in this class.
