“Manzanar: An American Story”

The Madison Project of SMC is proud to be a producing partner in a new multimedia orchestral piece by renowned conductor and music director Kent Nagano, with conceptual development by theater director/designer Robert Wilson, and a new script and direction by playwright/director Philip Kan Gotanda. The piece illustrates the evolution of civil liberty in America through the Japanese American internment camp experience during World War II, and features the American Youth Symphony, four celebrity actors (including Kristi Yamaguchi), a youth choir composed of children ages 9-17, and our very own SMC Chamber Choir. The work illuminates the compositions of the award-winning Naomi Sekiya, longtime Nagano collaborator Jean-Pascal Beintus, and leading jazz artist David Benoit. “Manzanar: An American Story” is supported by The California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, Madison Project of Santa Monica College, Japanese American National Museum, and Antioch University. For ticket information, please visit the UCLA Live webpage (www.uclalive.org) or call the UCLA Central Ticket Office (CTO) at (310) 825-2101.
