For the following classes, please make an appointment for ESL assessment when applying. These classes are limited to students whose first language is not English.

Intensive English

ESL 10S, MULTIPLE SKILLS PREPARATION    6 UNITS

• Prerequisite: None.

This course is a six week intensive ESL course designed to improve the skills of non-native speakers of English to the point where they can be successful in ESL 11A. The course concentrates on practicing speaking/listening skills, reading/vocabulary skills, sentence/paragraph writing skills, and editing skills. ESL 10S is a summer or winter intersession version of ESL 10 for fewer units. *Course credit may not be applied toward satisfaction of Associate in Arts Degree requirements.

ESL 11A, BASIC ENGLISH 1 (6,6)   6 UNITS

• Prerequisite: ESL 10.

ESL 11A is a 6-unit, 6-hour per week intermediate, multi-skills course with an emphasis on writing for non-native speakers of English who have completed ESL 10 or score at Level C on the SMC Placement Examination.

This course is the second semester of a two-semester course ESL 21AB. It continues the emphasis of essay writing, editing of gross grammar and mechanical errors, reading, and critical thinking. It is required of all students who have taken ESL 21A and received a “C” grade, and who therefore are not eligible for Group A placement or for English 1. *ESL 11B, ESL 21A, ESL 21B, and ESL 25 combined: maximum credit, 8 units.

ESL 25, COMPOSITION FUNDAMENTALS REVIEW FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS    3 UNITS

Transfer: *UC, CSU • Prerequisite: ESL 21B or English 21B or equivalent placement.

This course reviews and reinforces writing strategies including: the composing process, editing, and revision for English language. Extensive help will be given in vocabulary acquisition and word forms, sentence structure, and word order. *ESL 11B, 21A, 21B and 25 combined: maximum credit 8 units.

Speaking and Listening

ESL 15, ORAL COMMUNICATION   2 UNITS

• Prerequisite: ESL 10.

This speaking/listening course for group “A”, “B”, and “C” level non-native speakers of English examines the cross cultural communication issues between American culture and other cultures. It prepares students to understand and speak English more clearly and fluently in pairs, groups, class discussions, interviews, panels, and speeches. Conversation techniques, vocabulary acquisition, and reading, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are employed.

Grammar

ESL 16A, THE USE OF THE ARTICLE   1 UNIT

• Prerequisite: ESL 10 with a grade of C or better.

This course helps students whose first language is not English to communicate using speech and writing. The focus of the course is correct usage of articles, noun phrases, and noun phrase determiners. *Course credit may not be applied toward satisfaction of Associate in Arts Degree requirements.

• Prerequisite: ESL 10 with a grade of C or better.

This course helps students whose first language is not English to communicate using verbs correctly in speech and writing. The focus of the course is correct use of verb tense forms. *Course credit may not be applied toward satisfaction of Associate in Arts Degree requirements.
