Poet and fiction writer whose works often tackles issues of racial, ethnic, and other forms of discrimination—and whose acclaimed first novel Never Fade Away (2002) is frequently used as a college text—has had his stories and poems appear in many literary journals, anthologies, and magazines, and has published eight poetry collections, two of which have won national awards.
