ESL 14A, Pronunciation and Spelling: Vowel and Consonant Sounds 2 units
• Prerequisite: ESL 10.
This course offers the study and practice of the vowel and consonant sounds that are basic to North American pronunciation and speech style, and it emphasizes listening skills and auditory discrimination of these sounds. It also introduces the spelling patterns in relationship to the vowel and consonant sounds. This course is appropriate for students at the ESL 11A level or higher.

ESL 14B, Pronunciation: Rhythm and Intonation 2 units
• Prerequisite: None.
This course is designed to help ESL students communicate more effectivley in English by learning standard North American pronunciation and by improving their ability to be understood. The course includes a brief review of all vowel sounds and specific consonants, but its main focus is on strategies to improve rhythm and intonation.

ESL 15, Conversation and Culture in the U.S. 2 units
• Prerequisite: ESL 10.
This speaking/listening course for group “A”, “B”, and “C” level non-native speakers of English examines the cross cultural differences that affect communication. It prepares students to understand and speak English more clearly and fluently in pairs, groups, class discussions, interviews, panels, and speeches. Conversation techniques, vocabulary acquisition, and reading, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are employed.

This course helps non-native speakers of English to understand and use the noun system (count, non-count, proper, common, singular, plural nouns) as well as possessives and modifiers, articles (“a,” “an,” “the”), and other determiners (“this,” “that,” “those”) appropriately with nouns. This course is designed for intermediate students who want to improve their reading skill and increase their pleasure in reading. Students will improve their reading speed, comprehension, and critical thinking skills by learning strategies such as previewing, skimming, scanning, and interpreting meaning from context. They will learn how to distinguish topics, main ideas, details, facts and opinions. In addition, they will learn how to identify an author’s purpose and tone. They will learn how to draw inferences and recognize patterns of organization.
