Mathematics

Students new to the Santa Monica College mathematics program who wish to enroll in a course must take the Math Assessment test before enrolling. A student who has successfully completed college level math courses (earned a grade of C or better) at another institution may be able to verify having met prerequisites by submitting an official transcript. Continuing students must complete prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better.

This course reviews basic arithmetic giving a foundation in basic math computational skills. Operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimal numbers, and applications of percent are covered. The course is offered on a credit/no credit basis. Students enrolled in this course are required to spend time each week in the math lab on the main campus or at AET in room 240.

This course is intended to prepare the student for elementary algebra. It assumes a thorough knowledge of arithmetic. It covers fractions, decimals, grouping symbols, the order of operations, signed numbers, exponents, the use of formulas and other pre-algebra topics. The emphasis is on concepts essential for success in algebra. Those students who only need to review basic arithmetic should consider Math 81. Students enrolled in this course are required to spend time each week in the math lab or at AET in room 240.
