NEW! Latin American Education Program SMC Global Initiative Programs Planned for Winter 2009, Spring 2009, and Summer 2009
Santa Monica College celebrates cultural diversity. Over the past year, SMC has developed a College-wide initiative to provide for the formation of global citizenship and to promote the knowledge of people, customs, and cultures in regions of the world beyond one’s own. The Latin American Education Program, designed to introduce students to the rich history and cultural diversity of Latin America through a number of Education Abroad offerings, is a new program at SMC and is planned to begin in Winter 2009.
Developed by Professor Brandon Lewis of SMC’s Earth Science Department, who brings a passion for Central and South America from his site excavation work in Ecuador and as a director of the Three Rivers Archaeological Project in Belize, and with the enthusiastic participation of approximately half a dozen SMC faculty from throughout the academic curriculum, the program is designed to promote intercultural awareness and foster a more learned global perspective.
There are many exciting components to this program, including week-long Service Learning opportunities, 6 week Study Abroad courses, 8-week programs during the Spring semester, and faculty exchange agreements.
The program is set to commence in Winter of 2009. The Winter and Spring offerings will take place within the extended Yucatan of Central America (Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico), while the Summer Latin American Program will take place in Argentina.
