DANCE 14, Beginning Modern Jazz Dance (1,1,1,1)    1 unit

Elementary skills and techniques are emphasized in this course as students develop an appreciation of jazz as a dance style.

DANCE 19, Ballroom Dance    1 unit

This course gives students the opportunity to learn various social dance forms. It is designed for students with no dance experience as well as experienced dance students who want to be introduced to dance forms new to them. Examples of dance forms that may be included are: Fox Trot, Waltz, Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango, and Samba. The course will focus on exploring the differences and similarities among styles and techniques while also developing coordination skills. Historical studies and individual choreography will enhance the student’s knowledge of each dance form as well as encourage creativity.

DANCE 20, Ethnic Dance (2,2)    2 units

Both dance majors and non-majors learn specific ethnic dance styles within a given semester; the study of the music, art, and costume of the particular style is also included. The dance techniques learned will serve as preparation for the Ethnic Dance Performance Course (Dance 57B).

DANCE 25, African Dance (2,2)    2 units

This course is an introduction to the study of African dance with an emphasis on West African traditional and contemporary dances. Emphasis is on techniques of Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Dunham.

This course continues the training of Ballet 1 with emphasis on new steps and terminology in centre. Students interested in a dance major should take Dance 33 next, followed by Dance 34.

This movement course is the study of classical ballet techniques as presented on the third level of advancement. Techniques may include RAD (Royal Academy of Dance), French, Cecchetti, and of Russian. Movement technique and terminology are continued to include a more advanced level of barre and centre floor adage and allegro. Attendance of dance productions for which students must purchase tickets is required.

The course continues the development of graduated ballet techniques and combinations as well as study of spinal column, muscular balance and imbalance, conditioning, and dance injury prevention.
