JAPAN 1, Elementary Japanese I 5 units
Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC Foreign Language (required for UC only) • Prerequisite: None.
This course, using a communicative approach, introduces the student to Japanese sentence structure, basic vocabulary, and the two Japanese phonetic characters Hiragana and Katakana. The student learns to hold short conversations and write about present and past actions. The student is also introduced to important elements of Japanese culture and customs of the Japanese people.

JAPAN 2, Elementary Japanese II 5 units
Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC Foreign Language (required for UC only) • Prerequisite: Japanese 1*.
This course is a continuation of Japanese 1, and provides students with a basic foundation in the language at the elementary level. Using a communicative approach, students further their knowledge of pronunciation and grammar, including plain (short) forms and noun modifying clauses, as well as vocabulary and kanji. Students read and write essays on selected topics. To enhance student awareness and understanding, relevant aspects of Japanese culture are presented throughout the course. At least one hour of laboratory attendance per week is required.
*The prerequisite for this course is comparable to two years of high school Japanese.
