JAPAN 1, Elementary Japanese I 5 units
Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC Foreign Language (required for UC only) • Prerequisite: None.
This course, using a communicative approach, introduces the student to Japanese sentence structure, basic vocabulary, and the two Japanese phonetic characters Hiragana and Katakana. The student learns to hold short conversations and write about present and past actions. The student is also introduced to important elements of Japanese culture and customs of the Japanese people.

JAPAN 2, Elementary Japanese II 5 units
Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC AREA 3B (Arts and Humanities), Foreign Language (required for UC only) • Prerequisite: Japanese 1*.
This course is a continuation of Japanese 1, and provides students with a basic foundation in the language at the elementary level. Using a communicative approach, students further their knowledge of pronunciation and grammar, including plain (short) forms and noun modifying clauses, as well as vocabulary and kanji. Students read and write essays on selected topics. To enhance student awareness and understanding, relevant aspects of Japanese culture are presented throughout the course. At least one hour of laboratory attendance per week is required.
*The prerequisite for this course is comparable to two years of high school Japanese.

JAPAN 3, Intermediate Japanese I 5 units
Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC AREA 3B (Humanities) • Prerequisite: Japanese 2*.
This course continues developing the student’s four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with intensive and extensive aural/oral and reading/writing exercises to achieve proficiency. The course consists of a review of grammar, vocabulary building, and expansion of Kanji. The difference between spoken and written Japanese is introduced. The written style (bungo-tai) is implemented by writing compositions. The different levels of politeness in speech are systematically covered. Selected topics on Japanese culture are presented throughout the course to enhance student’s awareness and understanding of Japanese culture.
*The prerequisite for this course is comparable to three years of high school Japanese.

JAPAN 4, Intermediate Japanese II 5 units
Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC AREA 3B (Humanities) • Prerequisite: Japanese 3*.
This course concentrates on further perfecting the student’s four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It focuses on building vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, current colloquial usage, and developing fluency. Discussions and compositions are based on selected readings. The differences between spoken and written Japanese and different levels of politeness in speech are studied along with select features of Japanese culture, history, art, literature, and Japan’s political and economic systems.
The prerequisite for this course is comparable to four years of high school Japanese.
