“The
best way to keep up with the speed of the housing market is to
be able to fix up one of my own.”
Kevin Harris
is the proverbial “jack-of-all-trades.” But along the
way he’s become master of quite a few of them as well. “I’m
an auto mechanic by trade,” says Kevin. “But I actually
graduated from Boston University with a B.S. in film and television.”
Just now, Kevin has immersed himself in the various disciplines
offered in SMC’s Construction Technology department.
“I’m
taking finish carpentry and cement working now,” says Kevin.
“And I plan to move on to the estimating and cabinetmaking
classes.” Kevin’s goal in studying construction is not
to shift into yet another career. “The reason I’m taking
all these courses,” he explains, “is so that I’ll
get the practical experience I need to feel comfortable when I
buy a ‘fixer upper.’” A home of his own, finished
in loving detail by his own hands, is a practical dream for this
entrepreneur.
“I like
working with my hands,” says Kevin. “And the security
of being able to fix what’s yours is better than biting your
fingers when something goes wrong.” He says that everything
he’s learning in class is so new, “that I feel like
a big sponge. And I’ve got a long way to go before I saturate.”
Kevin plans
to eventually produce a series of instructional videos on what
he—as least for now—knows best: car repair. “But
I’ve applied for a patent on a new auto security device,”
he says. “So I may be moving into manufacturing. Basically,
I just want to keep as many solid irons in the fire as possible.”
