“It’s
exciting to be moving on to bigger steps in career and life. But
I have to say this: SMC was a home to me. And I miss it.”
Since coming
to SMC in 1987 from her native Germany, Andrea Schulte has made
some incredible strides with her study and work. She became editor
of The Corsair and transferred to UCLA with a 3.9 GPA. She has
only a few months left before taking her BA in English. But at
the moment, she works as associate editor for a major LA magazine.
“Things have gone really well for me in America,” says
Andrea. “But sometimes I do miss Europe. It was very hard
for me to be in Los Angeles—watching on TV with tears flowing—when
the Wall came down in Berlin.”
Andrea plans
to finish her degree and continue to work in magazine publishing.
“There is something very satisfying,” she says, “about
being involved in the whole process you have to go through to
put something in print. It’s creative, demanding and sometimes
exhausting. But it’s worth it when you help to produce something
beautiful.”
Andrea credits
her love of publication work in general to her SMC advisor for
The Corsair. “Mr. Donaldson was a real guide for me,”
she says. “When I first began to work for the paper, I was
a little unsure of myself. But ‘Mr. D.’ encouraged me
and never let me feel down. He always made me feel that I could
get the job done.”
Andrea plans
to visit her European family this spring before returning to UCLA.
“I think it would be lovely to always be connected with both
Europe and America,” she says. “And I will probably
always judge America by the kinds of people, the experiences I
had, when I first came to SMC. Naturally,” she adds, “most
of those impressions are good one.”
