“I
tell my students, ‘Relax. You’re now in a country where
everybody is an immigrant.’”
“I
came here 23 years ago from Argentina to do my graduate studies,”
says Ricardo Franzosi. “So I know what my international students
are dealing with. I tell them to take it easy and be patient.
Everything will work out and there are lots of people here to
help them.”
Ricardo teaches
computer skills that are on the cutting edge of the technology
which is so rapidly transforming our world. “I teach the
programming of languages, where it’s absolutely critical
to be up on the latest changes in the field,” he says. “Teaching
computer science is very expensive. But SMC has a major commitment
to stay up with current practices.” Ricardo has been very
pleased with the dedication of his students. “When they come
to me, they already have a burning desire to learn,” he says.
“And
most of them will be going to a four-year degree which is so essential
in this vast and competitive field.” But he adds that even
those who don’t plan on becoming “experts” ignore
knowledge of computers at their peril. “I can’t think
of a any line of work, from being a clerk to building a house,
that doesn’t require some kind of computer interaction,”
he says.
“I want
my students to experiment and find what they love doing best with
computers,” adds Ricardo. “Then we can help them go
for it. We can prepare them. We can inspire them. That’s
what we’re here for.”
