“Being
a president is a little pressurizing. But seeing people enjoy
something you’ve organized is a reward in itself.”
“I’d
like to stay here for a while and get some experience working,”
says Anthony Fu of Singapore who also served as president of the
International Students Club. “But eventually I want to take
what I’ve learned back home. It’s like two different
worlds: there are things I love about the US, but I always think
of Singapore as home. Anyway,” he adds with a laugh, “the
food sure is different.”
Anthony was
accepted for transfer to both USC and UCLA and was trying to decide
between them. “I’m majoring in communications, and I’d
like to go into public relations or radio broadcasting. I may
end up in film school, but I think I’ll probably go into
radio back in Singapore. I think radio can be very entertaining
and back home, it’s not quite as good as it could be. Whatever
I decide on doing,” he continues, “I’d like to
do it by staying behind the scenes.” And that’s an interesting
statement coming from someone who was so visible while at SMC.
“I met
so many people here, not just in my club but from other clubs
and all over campus too,” says Anthony. He adds that working
with the Interclub Council (ICC) is a lot like working with government
and that his involvement with clubs in general greatly expanded
his use of the campus. “I had to represent the club, help
people to organize, and I feel like I learned a lot of interpersonal
skills,” says Anthony. “I set up tours to UCLA and Loyola
for us and tried to find the balance between the fun events and
the things that were educational.”
He says that
SMC has been a good place to be for someone with good ideas who
wants to work just a little harder. “The Associated Students
were always helpful and supportive to us,” he says. “And
when I was working at the International Student Center, I really
saw the college go out of its way to be there for international
students who were looking for help.”
