“The
LRC is great. They have different kinds of tutors that are there
if you have problems, and they’ve got a math lab that’s
really terrific.”
“I’m
really enjoying my classes because the teachers are great. And
Terry Green, in math, is just awesome,” says Jean Evans.
“He’s great at explaining things in a step-by-step way
and he takes every opportunity to help you out. He’s even
got a study group that’s really there for people who need
a little extra help.” The “helping hand” that Jean
has found with Terry Green is one she plans on extending to others
in her own career in child care.
“I’m
taking child development because I think I’ll be going into
teaching,” she says. “I just really love kids and find
them fascinating. There’s frustration and stress sometimes
but they’re usually fun to work with and they’re so
teachable,” she says. “I’m working with four-year-olds
at a private school and I find that they’re just very loving.”
Jean says
that asking for help is the key to making the most of your SMC
years. “Talk to counselors, even if you’re unsure of
what GEs to take,” she says. “Make sure you’re
always on top of things and don’t fall behind. Form study
groups and if you’re having a problem, ask for a tutor. But
whatever you do,” she adds, “don’t leave things
to the last moment. I know, because I’ve done it, and it
doesn’t work.”
Jean’s
family is her biggest “booster club” at the moment.
“They always support me and encourage me to go as far as
I can. But SMC has so much to offer people who might not be in
my situation,” she adds. “You can just go into the Financial
Aid office and find out about all they offer. And the Scholarship
Office has something for everybody. It really doesn’t matter
what kind of background you come from. There’s always help.”
