“Research
shows that students who join clubs or otherwise get more involved
on campus earn better grades and are more persistent in reaching
their goals.”
Getting involved
and feeling connected with college and other students is frequently
the key to making successful use of all that SMC has to offer.
And as a counselor at the International Student Center, a teacher
of human development, and president of the Academic Senate, Linda
Webster works on all fronts to ensure that all students feel personally
involved in their educational success.
“Getting
involved on campus—in study groups, in clubs, in tutoring
others—can really keep students at the top of their classes,”
says Linda. In her Human Development classes, she helps students
to understand and take full advantage of all the opportunities
at SMC. “I wish the class was required for all students because
it’s such a good overview,” she says. “We cover
all the services offered and learn about all the regulations and
deadlines. It’s important to know how to formally drop a
class without risking an F, for example. But we also help students
to be sure of their goals, which major to take, and what classes
will be required. The class is required for all international
students, EOP&S, Black Collegians, Women’s College students
and people in special populations,” she says. “But it’s
actually open to anyone who wants to take it.”
Finding the
right path towards success for each and every student at SMC is
what Linda is all about. “I love learning and I think that
I have one of the most exciting jobs a person could have,”
she says. “SMC is a terrific place because it’s such
an agent of change. It’s an opportunity for students of all
levels of preparation, of all ages, to go ahead with their plans,
create their own success and complete their education.”
