“I
went to another school for a year to be an accountant, but I hated
it. And with that kind of attitude, nobody can expect to succeed
in college.”
Psychology
is an area of study where it’s sometimes hard to see the
connections to real life. But Vincent Jenzano, former state champion
wrestler from Florida, recently discovered that psychology can
have very practical and personal uses, too. “My teacher,
David Neswald, is the nicest guy in the world, and his philosophy
is that world peace will come through mutual respect. It’s
really helped me to think about this,” says Vincent, “because
in respecting others, I’m starting to get along with people
a little bit better too.”
Vincent had
made a stab at following in his CPA father’s footsteps. “But
that just wasn’t me, and I didn’t know what I was doing
there. So I went out into the real world as a stockbroker and
everybody told me, ‘You’re a great guy. Come back and
see us when you’ve got your degree.’ I didn’t believe
what my parents had been telling me about college,” says
Vincent. “But now I do. I learned in the past couple of years
that you’re better off—in all ways—being an educated
person.”
Vincent reports
seeing no conflicts in his study of math, business and psychology.
“I’m keeping an open mind about what I want because
four years is a long way down the road,” he says. “The
people in life I’ve most respected were lawyers, because
they seem so knowledgeable. But I have my own problems in life,
too, with emotions and anger. And in looking into that, I think
I’d be pretty good at helping other people solve their psychological
problems.” And while he decides on whether to meet the ‘real
world’ next as a lawyer or psychologist, Vincent reports
real comfort with where he is right now in life. “I look
forward to starting my week on Mondays with learning something
new,” he says. “I’m just feeling very good about
being a student at SMC. This is the ‘real world’ too.”
