“It
feels so good to be back in school after eight years. It’s
difficult too, but I’m learning to re-establish that discipline.”
If you ever
have occasion to phone the campus police, you’ll probably
be making the call because you desire “The Law.” And
chances are good that’s just who you’ll be talking to.
“I’m the day-time college police dispatcher, and it’s
the best job of any I’ve had,” says the young woman
whose name is nearly a job description. But now, after some years
in the work force, Desire has some new goals and a new career—or
two—taking shape at SMC.
“I like
the artistic things, including music and interior design,”
says Desire. “But my major is going to be in business administration,
where you have the power to negotiate deals and make decisions.
Studying business keys in with everything you might want to get
into in life.” But along with profit-and-loss statements,
Desire also studies the field anyone in business needs to be successful:
the English language. “I’m studying intermediate reading
and vocabulary to help me become more articulate and improve my
reading skills,” says Desire. “I’m thrilled about
my classes with Paul Roberts because he’s so committed and
intelligent. At times, he’s more like a teacher of history
because he’s so concerned with the future of society and
where education is going.” But the commitment of dedicated
people is something that Desire reports being a witness to, campus-wide.
“I talked
with Patty Del Valle in Counseling once. And even though she was
on the fly, she just stopped everything and said, ‘What do
you picture yourself doing in the future?’ That kind of thing
happens a lot at this college,” says Desire. “You find
a lot of people whose job—and that’s helping students—is
very, very important to them.”
