“What
impresses me most about SMC are the students themselves. I’m
surrounded by classmates who are working hard and being dedicated.”
He’s
heard them all a hundred times, but he shrugs them off good-naturedly.
“Sure, I take a lot of ribbing about the ‘Mee generation’
and lots of other variations on the theme,” says Jeff Mee.
“But I actually like having this unique name.” And if
all goes according to plan, the world of music will remember Jeff
for much more than his moniker.
“I’m
a recording engineer, and I’m sometimes working 60 hours
a week while I go to school,” says Jeff. “Most of my
recording dates are done for a classical music record company,
and we go out to churches and concert halls around the country.
So I’m normally on the road a lot, recording in places that
aren’t designed for it. It’s a real challenge,”
he continues, “because I have to be prepared for everything
to go wrong. But if I can handle this kind of stress, I should
be a real wizard by the time I get my own studio.” And running
his own studio is something Jeff has been planning for years.
“I’m
finishing up my language requirements at SMC to get my degrees
in music and audio technology,” he says. “I’ve
been out of school for a while, but it feels great to be here,
meeting new people and learning in a classroom again. I feel like
I’m really making progress with Spanish, and the Language
Lab is a great place to study. And the people I study with are
so friendly that I just wish I wasn’t on the road so much,”
he adds. “SMC is the kind of place that you really miss when
you go on to a full-time professional life,” says Jeff. “Sure,
I look forward to the days when people pay me all kinds of money
to produce records. But the opportunity of studying here is one
I’m very grateful that I’ve had.”
