“There’s
a plethora of resources available to you at SMC. Take advantage
of them, persevere, and succeed!”
Are you listening,
Martha Stewart? Carolyn Gochin has a lot of thoughts about how
beauty, style, and design can enhance all aspects of your life.
“I’m in Interior Architectural Design at the Academy,
and I plan to become an environmental designer,” says Carolyn.
“Many years ago, I was a Fine Arts major, and then I turned
to nursing as a profession. But I’ve always had this creative
side of my personality that never completely opened up. Now, that’s
all changing.”
Carolyn says
that her creative rebirth is the direct result of her SMC experiences.
“I very much enjoy being part of the Academy, and I like
the ‘hands-on’ attention that each student receives
here. I’ve had brilliant teachers like Michele Rose, who’s
thorough, patient, and lightens the classroom setting with her
enthusiasm and sense of humor,” says Carolyn. “Additionally,
she has amazing practical knowledge about developing a client
base, which she passes on to us without effort.”
A grandmother
of three, Carolyn is enthusiastically coming to grips with the
computer as a revolutionary design tool. “I’d certainly
rather draw than compute,” she admits. “But I clearly
see the advantages of computers when it comes to certain aspects
of production and design. And after this year, I’ll be prepared
to present my portfolio to a list of design houses approved by
the College. I’m confident that I’ll soon be working
at some large interior design firm, and I would encourage any
other woman of my age to find a new path through SMC.”
